Flooding follows Tuesday's heavy rainfall

Steady rain Tuesday sent water roaring down Palouse drainages and caused extensive flooding in Pullman. Water from Missouri Flat Creek overflowed on to Grand Street where businesses were flooded.

Water also poured onto Grand from Stadium Way and other arterials which descend off hills from the campus area in the northeast quarter of the city and the northwest quarter.

Mud residue deposits and debris were along N. Grand Street Wednesday morning, but the water had subsided.

The deluge at Pullman caused erosion along the street. Some workers and shoppers at Pullman were stranded by the flood, and rescue operations began.

One car was washed up against a building across from Cougar Country.

Extensive flooding was reported in Moscow where Paradise Creek ran over its banks as it headed downstream towards Pullman.

The NRCS rain gauge in Colfax had a reading on one inch Wednesday morning. Staffers believe the gauge actually maxed out as the heavy rains hit late in the afternoon.

At Colfax, surface runoff flooded the Clay Street area during the height of the storm, and mud and debris remained along the street Wednesday morning. Clay Street was blocked off by city crews.

Both river flood channels were roaring in Colfax Wednesday morning with the S. Fork of the Palouse River channel moving the flow from Pullman through town.

The North Fork channel flowed high against the walls and water was moving through at high speed.

At Palouse, the North Fork inundated Lions Park and other low areas but did not go into the downtown area.
