April 4, 2019
Whitman County Deputies, Colfax and Pullman officers Thursday departed here on a trip to Ellensburg to attend services for Ryan Thompson, the Kittitas County Deputy who was fatally wounded in a shootout at Kittitas last Tuesday night, March 20.
Colfax fire volunteers used a ladder truck to hoist a U.S. flag at the Highway 26 intersection where the patrol cars departed westbound to attend the services. They joined law officers from around the state in paying tribute to Thompson, who was a 15-year member of the Kittitas County sheriff's office.
Sheriff Brett Meyers and seven deputies made the trip. Sheriff's Chaplain Ron McMurray coordinated the departure.
Officer Corey Alcantar represented the Colfax Police Department at the service. Pullman officers Teayana Dillon, Shane Emerson and Luv St. Andre made the trip to the memorial service.
The service for Deputy Thompson, 42, was conducted at Central Washington University.
Kittitas Officer Denito Chavez sustained a severe leg wound in the shootout and was flown by helicopter to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment. He was a new member of the three-member Kittitas police department.
Also killed in the shootout was the suspect, Juan Fores Del Toro, who was later identified as an illegal U.S. immigrant.
A Thompson memorial fund and a Chavez family fund have been set up at U.S. Bank.
