Jon Denny of Liberty, and Carson Cloaninger of Colfax, high-point scorers for their respective teams, look for a rebound in the Saturday eliminator.

The Colfax boys basketball season came to a decisive end Saturday when Liberty's Lancers stopped the Bulldogs in the last chance game for the NE district's third and last ticket to the state regional round.

The Lancers, led by big Jon Denny, took the deciding win after bowing to the Bulldogs twice in the NE-south league campaign during the season. Final score was 55-39.

Liberty broke out to an early lead in the first two quarters, while the Bulldogs struggled to hit baskets.

The Lancers had a 26-17 lead at the break.

After the half, Colfax began to pick up ground by scoring the first six points. Liberty's lead shrank to 26-23 at the 3:38 mark in the third quarter, and Bulldog senior Cameron Hiatt snagged a steal at mid court and took it all the way to bucket.

That put the Bulldogs on the brink of flipping the game, but Liberty took the ball down the court and senior Brandon Holling hit a three-pointer from the corner.

Denny hit two toss shots at the end of the quarter and picked up another four toss shots at the start of the fourth quarter as Liberty began to pull away. Denny finished with 17 points in his best game against the Bulldogs

Colfax senior Carson Cloaninger, who won the league's MVP award, led Colfax with 19 points in his last game as a senior.

Colfax advanced to the final elimination round with a 63-33 crunch over Chewelah in the Friday elimination game. Colfax posted a 40-12 lead over the Cougars in what was a reunion collision for two former foes in NE A ball.

Cloaninger hit 25 points in the Friday win with five three-pointers in the mix, and Bryan Rubin finished with 15.

Colfax boys finished the year at 18-6. Rubin, Hiatt, Bennett Gray and Kelan Becker were other seniors on the team.

Colfax went into the Friday and Saturday elimination tests at West Valley after being upset by Asotin in semi-final round at West Valley last Tuesday.

Asotin Saturday bowed to St. George's 47-60 in the NE championship game which still allowed both finalists a ticket to this week's regional round.
