Voglers file report on Hawaii vacation

February 14, 2019

Mark and Kathy Vogler returned from eight days on Maui, snorkeling, swimming, going to luaus and spending time with their son and his family. Two-and-a-half-year-old grandson, Sam Vogler, was taught the finer points of whale watching from the lanai by grandma and grandpa. This was the perfect time of year to watch humpback whales as they return from Alaska to calve in the calm waters off Maui. Leaving 79 degree sunshine and returning to 9 degree snow and ice was rough.

News has been received of the passing of Whitman County native June Sather Broeckel. Broeckel attended LaCrosse School and graduated in 1953, earned her Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctorate in Education from Pacific Lutheran University and taught school for 50 years. She and her husband of 62 years, Al Broeckel of Fircrest, grew up together and graduated from LaCrosse in the same class. They had three children: Janet Trantolo (Vince) of New York City, John (Camille) of Jacksonville, Ore., and JoAnn Elrod (Brian) of Bellevue. She leaves four grandchildren, Lauren, Aiden, Landry and Brady; three sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She passed away Feb. 8 after a long battle with dementia. Services are pending.

A few Dustyites braved the inclement weather Monday to attend funeral services at the Lutheran Church in Colfax for Gene Leinweber. Leinweber was a long-time employee of Jones Truck and Implement and was well known and liked by the area farmers.
