James Hulse

Mar. 19, 1935 - Feb. 7, 2019

James (Jay) Criss Hulse was a long time resident of Colfax, Washington. On Thursday, February 7 2019, Jay passed at the beautiful age of 83. The burial service will be held at the Steptoe Cemetery at a later date and time.

James Criss Hulse was born on March 19, 1935, in Rock Springs, Tennessee. He was born to Eldridge Foster Hulse and Lyla Mae Colley Hulse. James was the fifth child in a line of six. He had four older sisters and one younger brother.

The Hulse family moved to Steptoe, Washington, when James was 12 years old. He attended the Steptoe School District until he was a sophomore in high school; when he then entered into the United States Navy.

After the Navy, James met and married Alvira McBride.

Thereafter, James met and married Dorothy (Hatfield) Cook. The couple settled together in Colfax, Washington, where James briefly worked for Arrow Machinery and Jones Truck & Implement. James and Dorothy bought Jays Pancake and Steakhouse in 1974. They both were proud to feed the City of Colfax, and surrounding areas for eight years. Due to health reasons, James retired in 1980 and the restaurant was then sold in 1982.

James loved nothing more than to spend time with his family; especially his grandkids and great-grandkids. He also enjoyed traveling and fishing. In his down time, James loved to watch baseball and NASCAR.

James Criss Hulse will be missed by many in the community. He will be forever missed by his wife, Dorothy; and children, Leslie Hulse of Minnesota, Lyla Hulse of Idaho, Bobbi Ross of Idaho, Shellie Schluneger of Washington, Cathi Hulse of Idaho, Kim Hulse of Washington, Becky Hulse of Washington, and Tom Hulse of Washington and sister Queenie Leinweber. He will also be missed by his nine grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, and whom he thoroughly had great joy spending time with. James was preceded in death by his three sisters and one brother.
