Habitat for Humanity will build houses in Palouse, Uniontown

February 14, 2019

The local chapter of Habitat for Humanity will build its 2019 house in Palouse, its third there since the chapter formed in 1992. It has also bought land in Uniontown for its 2020 project.

In Palouse this spring, volunteers will break ground on Illinois Street for a 10-month construction schedule. Recipients will be Richard and Roberta Kruger, currently Troy residents. Richard is a veteran and Roberta has a disability with Multiple Sclerosis.

The house will be paid for by all local money, in large part raised at Palouse Habitat for Humanity’s annual fundraiser “Beans N’ Jeans,” set April 20 at the SEL Events Center in Pullman. Last year’s event, which includes live, silent and dessert auctions, raised more than $100,000.

The Palouse project is expected to cost more than $120,000, with the rest of the money to come from the Palouse Habitat Surplus Sale Store which opened in Moscow in 2012. It sells donated new and like-new furniture, appliances and building materials.

Construction in Palouse is set to begin when weather allows.

“We’re at least a couple weeks out,” said Jennifer Wallace, Palouse Habitat for Humanity executive director.

The work will run on a two days per week schedule, Thursdays and Saturdays, with tools and lunch provided. All labor is volunteer, with the only costs being materials, land and taxes.

The Palouse and Uniontown houses will mark a return to Whitman County after recent years’ work in Latah County.

“We’ll probably be building the next couple years in Whitman County,” Wallace said.

Any interested volunteers may call Palouse Habitat at (208) 883-8502.

“We’d love to sign them up,” Wallace said.
