Bulldog boys add two wins, host Wahkiakum tonight

Colfax boys booked two wins in the NE-south league start over the weekend to bump their record to 5-1. The Bulldogs stopped LRS Broncos 44-36 Friday night in the south side opener on the home court and powered past Asotin 68-62 Saturday night on the Panthers court to move to a 2-0 league mark.

Colfax will host Wahkiakum in an unusual non-leaguer tonight and then travel to Lakeside Friday to wrap up the pre-holiday part of the season with a non-league matchup.

Colfax teams are booked into the West Valley holiday tourney with boys games Dec. 27 and Dec. 29, both at 1:30 p.m.

Friday on the home court, the LRS Broncos moved out to a 15-10 lead after the locals had trouble getting in gear. They found the switch in the second quarter with Kelan Becker and Bryan Rubin hitting three pointers to tie it up at the 4:40 mark of the second quarter. Carson Cloaninger hit a three with 3:29 left in the half, and Bennett Gray and Becker added buckets.

The Broncos had just one bucket in the second quarter and trailed by 10, 27-17 at the half.

The teams played even for the third quarter, but LRS crawled back into contention in the last frame.

The Broncos knocked the Bulldog lead down to five points twice with 6-5 senior Bryce Kelly collecting on two toss shots to make it 35-40 with 1:40 left. Spencer Gehring hit one of two toss shots after a technical was called on the Colfax bench, and that ratcheted the Colfax lead down to four points, 40-36.

Colfax played clock burn for the final seconds, and Cloaninger made good on two toss shots to close it out at 42-36.

Becker led Colfax with 16 points on a 70 percent shooting night and Cloaninger finished with 14.

Bryce Kelly led the Broncos with 15.

Saturday at Asotin, Colfax charted for a 42-19 lead at the half, but Asotin came out after the break and scrubbed 13 points off the big Colfax lead in the third quarter. They cut another four points off the lead, but still came up six beans short.

Colfax took the win 68-62 to move their overall record to 5-1 with the lone loss to St. George's last week.

Cloaninger hit six threebies against the Panthers and finished with 36 points, more than half of the Colfax total. Gray hit two three-pointers and finished with 13 for the Bulldogs.
