Howard D. Leonard

Funeral services for the Pastor Howard Dean Leonard were Saturday, Dec. 15, at 11 a.m. at Faith Church, 401 Third Street, Onaway, Idaho. He died Dec. 11, 2018.

Born in Eureka, Mont., Oct. 18, 1928, to Ed and Eva Hellinga Leonard, he grew up on the family homestead on Deep Creek near Fortine, Mont., and attended elementary school in Fortine and graduated from Lincoln County High School in Eureka, Mont.

In 1950, he married Mary Flaget.

He was a logger and worked a variety of jobs as a truck driver, boxcar loader, excavation worker and head sawyer. He also worked in the Christmas tree industry near Eureka. He sustained a crushed leg when a skidder rolled over him. He went back to work at the mill, where they built an accommodation for him to continue working on the greenchain while he recovered from the injury.

He moved his family to the Palouse Country and family lived in Palouse for nine years, then moved to Potlatch in 1974. They purchased a home in Onaway in 1984.

After moving from Montana, he worked as a WSU custodian, school bus driver, snowplow driver and rural route milkman to supplement income while in the ministry as a pastor. Howard carried out his ministry of 42 years until 2008. He performed more than 80 weddings and both ministered and sang for funerals in the area. He was an ordained minister of the Full Gospel Fellowship of Churches and Ministers International and served on their board starting in 1968. He joined a local minister's fellowship in the early 70s.

Surviving are his wife, Mary, at their home in Onaway; three daughters, Linda (Darrell) Muck, Kimberly; Darla (Lee) Nicholson, Potlatch, and Brenda (Bob) Helbling, Moscow; 11 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Glen Leonard, and an infant daughter, Helen Jo Leonard.
