Late Thursday night, William Webster worked until a very late hour at Ben Burgunder's place on West Street, near the Union Pacific yard, and started away for his home shortly before midnight. As he crossed the street, toward the residence of D.H. Shaw, a man stepped up to him and was immediately recognized as Charley McDonald, the person who was tried for the crime of horse stealing in this county last spring and acquitted.

"Do you know of any empty box-cars that a fellow could ride out on?" young McDonald asked. It was rather a queer question to put to...
