'First baby' is sixth in family: The sixth child of Mr. and Mrs. L. Wayne Maley of Thornton was the first baby born in the new Whitman Community Hospital. Patrick William arrived at 10:52 p.m. Sunday, weighing eight pounds, four ounces, even beating the doctor to the delivery room. Named after an uncle, he will join Joseph, who will soon be six; Breda, 7; Beth, 8; Betty, 9, and Becky, 11. Maternal grandmother is Mrs. Harry Brophy, St. John, and the maternal grandfather is Lester Maley, Thornton. The parents live on a farm near Thornton. The mother is the former Marilyn Dollar-Hide, a St. John native. An excerpt from the Dec. 12, 1968, issue of the Colfax Gazette.

Late Thursday night, William Webster worked until a very late hour at Ben Burgunder's place on West Street, near the Union Pacific yard, and started away for his home shortly before midnight. As he crossed the street, toward the residence of D.H. Shaw, a man stepped up to him and was immediately recognized as Charley McDonald, the person who was tried for the crime of horse stealing in this county last spring and acquitted.
