1B girls basketball: Colton returns core

November 29, 2018

The core returns for another basketball season for the Colton girls.

The 2018 state 1B champions, and 2016 state champions on which many of the core played as freshmen, are now seniors.

Jordyn Moerhle, Dakota Patchen, Emily Schultheis and Abby Kelly led last year’s team that went 26-1 and beat Pomeroy for the state championship. Joining them are two returning starters at guard; sophomores Josie Schultheis and Rylee Vining.

The team graduated post player Georgia Meyer.

Coach Clark Vining is in his 14th year with the Wildcats, a timeframe which includes nine state championships – and an unprecedented eight consecutive wins from 2009-16.

All the while, as Vining has said before, this team has never won one.

This particular team of 2018-19, although, has its entire starting five back, including three, three-and four-year starters in Patchen, Moerhle and Schultheis.

Returning varsity players also include Maggi Pluid, senior guard; Addison Kinzer, senior post, and Taylor Thomas, junior post.

Colton opens the season Friday at home against 2B St. George’s, followed by another 2B game at Colfax Dec. 4. Tip-off Friday is 7:30 p.m. The Colfax game starts at 6 p.m.
