Sept. 12, 1920 - Oct. 26, 2018

Evelyn Hinnenkamp, lifelong Colfax matriarch, died peacefully on Friday morning, October 26, 2018, at The Courtyard in Colfax. She was 98. The rosary will be recited on Friday, Nov. 2, at 7:00 pm at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Colfax. Funeral Mass will be Saturday morning at the church at 10:00 am. Burial will follow in the Colfax Cemetery. Viewing for Evelyn will be Thursday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm at Bruning Funeral Home.

Evelyn was born September 12, 1920, at home in the Manning area near Colfax to Joseph and Nellie Miller Lynch. She attended the Manning School through the 8th grade and graduated from Colfax High School in 1937. She attended Washington State University for a short time and also worked at Grady Drug in Colfax.

Evelyn married Norbert Bernard “James” Hinnenkamp on September 24, 1941, in Colfax. They were acquainted with each other over the years through church. They made their home on a farm near Palouse for a few years before moving to a farm near the Colfax airport.

Evelyn was a homemaker and mom first and foremost. She raised her family of four with love and hard work. Plenty of baking, sewing, quilting, yard work and flower gardening were a huge part of Evelyn’s life. Her pies and cinnamon rolls were especially sought after treats. She was a lifelong member of the Green Hollow Club and actively involved in the St. Patrick Catholic Church and a member of the altar society there as well. Evelyn and Jim moved to a home in the Shawnee area in 1960 and Evelyn remained independent there until recently moving to the Courtyard only a few months ago. Her husband Jim died in 1995 after 53 years of marriage together. Evelyn mostly kept to herself, quietly taking care of her yard and flower gardens and she enjoyed that peaceful time.

She is survived by her four children; Kay VanDyke, Colfax, Edward (Karen) Hinnenkamp, Pullman, Betty Jo (Tom) Sebo, Spokane, and John (Kristie) Hinnenkamp, also of Colfax; 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Joseph, in 1956 and a son-in-law, Larry VanDyke.

The family suggests memorial gifts be made to St. Patrick Church Foundation, 1018 S Main St, Colfax, WA 99111 or to the Morning Star Boys Ranch, 4511 S Glenrose Rd, Spokane, WA 99223. On-line guest book is at http://www.bruningfuneralhome.com
