Colfax takes a break before crossover round

Colfax football will take a bye this week before rolling into the NE crossover round to decide which three teams will advance to the first round of the state playoffs. Although other league teams Friday will wrap up the regular season, the script is already on the table for the crossover round.

The 13-14 loss to Reardan on the Bulldogs' field Friday left Colfax at 2-2 in the NE-South standings and in third place for the playoff.

Reardan, which will shoot for a league sweep against Liberty this week, is already the number-one finisher at 3-0, and Asotin, which will face LRS Friday, is already the second-place finisher.

One surprise in the NE last week was a 42-7 win by Chewelah over Northwest Christian. That put the Cougars in the top slot on the north side, and they will host Colfax in the crossover.

Northwest Christian and Asotin will face off as the number-two finishers from each side, and Reardan will play Wilbur Creston, the third-place finisher on the north side.

Coach Mike Morgan credited the young Bulldog team with putting up a battle against Reardan, a big team which has revived the Indian's traditional ground grinder mode of winning.

Colfax managed to stifle a lot of Reardan's ground game and came close to stopping them Friday in what turned out to be the season's last show on the Bulldogs' field.

The Reardan win at Colfax Friday came down to the difference in extra points. Reardan picked up a two-point conversion after their second TD in the third quarter, and Colfax, which kicked for a point after their first TD, gambled for two after their second TD and fell short.

The Bulldogs had one more shot late in the game when Jacob Brown intercepted a Reardan pass and ran all the way to the 21-yard line, but Reardan's defense held them out of the end zone to keep the win.

Reardan scored first Friday and took a 6-0 lead for the half with QB Tyler Sprecher grabbing a fumbled snap off the ground and hitting Andrew Alsept in the end zone for a TD. The Indians missed the point kick.

The bailout pass for the first TD turned out to be Reardan's total for air yards in the game.

Colfax took the lead after the half with a 21-yard pass play from QB Layne Gingerich to Nick Klaveano. Brown booted the extra point, and Colfax had a 7-6 lead with 6:29 left in the third quarter.

Reardan answered with one of their long ground drives and a six-yard TD run by Riley Blauert. A two-point conversion run by Sprecher put them up 14-7.

Colfax came back with Gingerich hitting Klaveano on a 39-yard TD. Colfax gambled with a conversion pass attempt for two points which would have put them on top, but they didn't connect.

"We had a lot of opportunities, and we didn't give up," Morgan commented. Overall, the Bulldog earned credit for staying in the game and getting close to derailing Reardan's charge at a league sweep.

Reardan totaled 292 yards in the game with all but three yards of it on the ground. Sprecher finished with 202 yards on 35 carries.

For Colfax, Gingerich hit 11 of 22 passes for 140 of the Bulldog total of 256 yards.
