Merritt wins at Asotin

Gavin Merritt of Tekoa/Rosalia booked another big win Tuesday in the 5000 meter run at Asotin, but the host Panthers dominated the team scores with big wins over the Colfax Bulldogs.

Merritt clocked 16:20.13 for a margin of more than 16 seconds over Asotin’s Eli Engledow. The Panthers had three more runners finish behind Engledow to wrap up the team score.

Asotin finished with 21 points. Other team scores were Colfax 63, Valley Christian 74, Tekoa/Rosalia 96, and Garfield/Palouse 117.

On the girls side Asotin’s Maia Dykstra led with an 18:14 and two Panther runners finished behind her. Colfax freshman Anna Cocking placed fourth with a 20:47, and senior Tayma Vanek placed fifth at 21:09.

Asotin finished with 23 team points, and Colfax had the other team score at 34.
