Garfield Plaza marks opening in old Mitz's Cabinets building

October 11, 2018

A new business incubator opened in Garfield last weekend in the former Mitz’s Cabinets shop.

Garfield Plaza, a 5,000 square-foot space with booths, dividers and an open common area in the middle, marked its grand opening Saturday with 327 tickets given out for door prizes.

“The first weekend was awesome,” said Sonja Hall, the proprietor of the Garfield In-Convenience Store, who is negotiating to buy the building from Craig Mitzemburg.

For Garfield Plaza, Hall rents space to various vendors, from the Reading Gallery to Patsy’s Quilt Corner to Sonshine Bead & Leather Work. A 7x10 foot space rents for $40 per month plus 10 percent of all sales.

Funky Junk from St. John is another tenant, one of a total of 19. The Plaza will be open Monday through Friday 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. Free coffee is served and free wi-fi is available for anyone gathering in the common area. All purchases go through one cash register.

Garfield In-Convenience Store is also a renter in the Plaza – moving 60 feet from its original location in the Mitz’s building.

The plaza opened after six weeks of converting the former Mitz’s shop area.

“This has been an underlying goal ” said Hall. “Get the community back into a business mode. It’s been so sleepy for so long.”
