Oakesdale girls take state back to back

Oakesdale girls again proved "it ain't over until it's over" when they scored three points after the track had shut down Saturday after a long final day of the state championships at Roos Field in Cheney. Oakesdale trailed its west side opponent, Mount Vernon Christian, by one point after the last race, the 4x400 relay.

The MVC team took off like a rocket in the race and bested the Nighthawk foursome by more than 15 seconds to collect win points and peg a 90-89 edge in the point standings.

However, Logan Reed, who crossed the turf at Roos Field to run a leg in the relay, returned to the triple jump event and placed sixth to stack the last three points for a 92-90 win and the state title.

Coach Cap Perry noted the three-point topper by Reed served to cap a day when the Nighthawks tangled with MVC after the two teams tied last year for the first-place trophy.

Oakesdale, which has just one senior on a team of 10 girls, was led by wins from Anne Hockett in both hurdle events. The Oakesdale junior clocked a 16.61 in the 100 hurdles and a 46.54 in the 300. Both times were faster than the wins she posted in the same events when she won as a sophomore.

Oakesdale stacked up points in most of the events on the track card. They placed second in two of the three relay events and third in the short relay.

Hockett and Emma Perry place second and third in the 200 behind Cusick's Alana Keogh who set a record in the 200. Hockett also placed third in the 400 behind another record win by Keogh in that race.

Emma and Elisabeth Perry picked up points with a fourth and fifth in the 1600 behind Emily Adams of Waitsburg who stacked wins in the 800, 1600 and 3200.

Mount Vernon topped Oakesdale in the 4x200 relay and the 4x400 relay.

St. John/Endicott's Jaydyn Corder took a repeat win in the discus with a sling of 112-6, five feet longer than the mark posted last year when she won the event as a sophomore.

Corder placed fourth in the shotput.

Jazzmyn Gordon of LaCrosse/ Washtucna/Kahlotus placed second to Corder in the discus. Alynn Harder of LWK placed second in the javelin which also saw Aliya Rutledge of Oakesdale finish fifth and Autumn Meyer of LWK ninth. Meyer received a sportsmanship medal when she pointed out she had been awarded the eighth-place medal for her number-nine finish. Meyer also placed fifth in the high jump, and Gordon placed seventh.

Top mark for the boys side of the 1B came in the high jump where SJE's Griffin Parrish and Cooper Lundberg finished second and third behind Isaiah Dayton of Upper Valley Christian. Parrish and Dayton actually dueled at the 6-4 mark, and after Dayton cleared it Parrish passed to 6-5 but could not nail it.

The Eagle boys finished with 18 points to tie for eighth place behind Mount Vernon Christian who rolled out 118 points.
