Colfax, Reardan to decide state slot

Colfax’s third baseman Greta Geier puts the stop on Davenport’s Hailey Johnson Tuesday at McDonald Park.

It turned out to be a Gorilla day Tuesday at McDonald Park when the Davenport team rolled past Reardan and Colfax to advance to the final round of NE qualifications May 20 in Spokane. Colfax and Reardan will play in a Tuesday elimination round for a ticket to advance to the May 20 finals.

On the line are four slots assigned to the NE for the state finals which are set for Yakima May 26-27.

Davenport Tuesday charged for nine runs in the last two innings to take out Colfax 13-6 in the Tuesday qualifier at McDonald Park. The Gorillas matched up with Colfax after outlasting Reardan 9-6 in the first game to earn a second-round matchup with the Bulldogs.

Colfax hosted and won a bye in the Tuesday agenda after finishing second on the south side of the NE.

Davenport's explosion in the last two innings came after Colfax scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 6-4 lead going into the last two frames. The three runs erased a 4-3 lead posted by the Gorillas who also had a 3-0 edge over Colfax after the first inning.

Davenport pitcher Grace Lilje threw all seven innings for the Gorillas to get the win. She allowed Colfax seven hits, but the Bulldogs had trouble collecting at the plate. Lilje walked four Colfax batters and struck out two.

She also clubbed two doubles and a single to top the Davenport hits.

Ciarrah Smith and Sydney Zeller each had two hits for the Gorillas.

Colfax pitcher Abbie Miller also pitched seven innings for the Bulldogs and allowed the Gorillas 13 hits, most of them in the last two frames. She fanned four Davenport batters and walked five.

Chelsea Becker and Maddy Shrope each had two singles for the Bulldogs who had trouble catching up to Lilge's speed. Madi Cox, Lindsey Lindgren and Alicia Knee each singled for Colfax.

Colfax will play Tekoa/Rosalia in the Tuesday elimination round. The Timberwolves were downed by a Springdale team which went on to defeat Lind/Ritzville/Sprague to win the round at Ritzville.

Northwest Christian, the top team on the north side, blanked Liberty 8-0 to get a final round ticket at Colbert, and Kettle Falls topped Asotin 13-3.

The Colfax playoff rounds Tuesday followed a twilight non-leaguer against Pullman last Thursday. The hounds won 10-8 despited a six-run charge by Colfax in the last inning.

The game was moved to a twilight round after spring weather altered the Bulldogs' schedule through the league campaign.

Colfax finished with six hits, but had eight errors against the hounds.

Pullman had 10 hits for the night.

Miller struck out five guests and walked four for the game. Pullman starter Desiree Tennant allowed the Bulldogs five hits.

Colfax hitters were Becker, triple; Lindgren, double; and Cox, Cheyanne Stokes, Shrope and Knee, each a single.

The evening game also included a seniors recognition for Lindgren, who joined the Bulldogs last year from Oakesdale, and Stokes.

Madi Cox slides for a score against Ciarrah Smith of Davenport as Colfax’s Chelsea Becker looks on. Davenport won both games Tuesday to advance to the May 20 round in Spokane
