Many attend Dusty 90-year church anniversary Sunday

Dusty

Sunday, Nov. 13, the Country Bible Church celebrated the 90th anniversary of the dedication of the church building. The church started out as St. John's German Congregational Church. The church was built in 1926 after out-growing family homes and a former schoolhouse. In 1972, they withdrew from ties to the German Congregational affiliation and became an independent church known as the Country Bible Church. Visitors came from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and British Columbia for the celebration.

Pastor Steve Szasz gave the history of the building and the worship message, “Lessons from 1926.” Mark Ziegler sang for the service, and Art Sager and Harm Smith read scripture and led the singing.

Many special guests were in the audience.

Virginia Krom Sanders, Colfax, was the first person baptized in the church as an infant, a few days after the dedication of the building.

Martha Scheideman Hibbard, Spokane, was a member when the church was built.

Birdie Stueckle Holling, Spokane, was also one of the early members of the church.

Mark Wiebe, son of former Pastor Lloyd and Ruth Wiebe; Dave Mortlock and Len and Sue Mortlock, sons of former Pastor Earl and Brownie Mortlock, and Mike and Gwen Klontz, grandson of an early minister to the church, Rev. Wm.

Aumann, were all special guests.

A group photo had to be taken inside the church by Kristin Repp. A lunch was served in the church basement, and the afternoon was spent viewing memorabilia such as a German language family Bible belonging to Jacob Stueckle; photos of former pastors and their families, confirmation classes, weddings and other memorable events; visiting and sharing memories, and generally enjoying the day. Members of the church spent many hours and a lot of effort to make the celebration a resounding success.

Mark Wiebe, Nanaimo, B.C., was the weekend guest of Karen Broeckel.

Wiebe came to attend the 90th anniversary celebration of the Country Bible Church.

Saturday evening, they were joined by Ed and Joan Broeckel and Bob and Leslie Stueckle for supper and visiting at the Broeckel home.

The men grew up together in the church when Wiebe’s father, Lloyd Wiebe, was pastor there.

Wiebe also visited at the home of David and Phyllis Stueckle Sunday evening.

Monday, he toured the Parsonage (where the Wiebe family lived while at Dusty) with Vicki Broeckel, proprietor of the bed and breakfast, and visited with another boyhood friend, Randy Scheideman, at the Dusty Country Store before returning to his home in British Columbia.

Colene and Art Sager were in Mesa on Saturday for a Flying Farmers meeting and an early Thanksgiving potluck with the group’s members. They had to drive, rather than fly, to the event due to foggy weather.

Brian and Angela Broeckel and daughter Sami BeDell, Walla Walla, drove to Portland Friday to spend the weekend with daughter Alex BeDell.

Tony and Denise Kendall, Tacoma, spent Veterans Day weekend with Tom and Doreen Riedner and attended the 90th anniversary of the Country Bible Church. They returned home Sunday afternoon.

Harmon and Jan Smith, their daughter Gina, her husband, Jason, and their son, Micah, attended the Trailblazers game in Portland to celebrate Micah’s ninth birthday. Micah got to “high five” the whole team of Trailblazers as they ran onto the court. During a break in the game, Gina was chosen to play a game of “The Price is Right” and won a 32-inch television set and a DVD player. All in all, it was a birthday to remember. The Smiths left Friday and returned home Saturday evening.

Norm and Janice Pauls are grandparents to Caleb Jeffrey Pauls, born to Arianne and Jeff Pauls on Thursday, Nov. 10. The baby weighed eight pounds, eight ounces.

Loren Scaggs and Beth Christie celebrated Loren’s birthday by attending the theater presentation “Beautiful, The Carole King Story” in Spokane Sunday evening.

The Dusty B.B. Club met last week in the home of Helen Appel. Suzy McNeilly taught members some basic yoga moves. Roll call was a sharing of favorite recipes. The next meeting will be at St. Patrick’s parish hall on Thursday, Dec. 15, at 9 a.m. to decorate for the Christmas party, which will be at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 16. Members are to bring a hot dish and a dessert or salad for the dinner. Roll call on the 15th will be a cookie exchange. Bring a dozen cookies to share. Hostesses will be Fran Maki and Dianne Appel.

Taste ‘n’ Tear 4H club will have its first meeting of the year at the home of Helen Appel on Saturday, Nov. 19, at 9 a.m.
