Shred truck stop to benefit 'S.T.E.A.M.'

St. John/Endicott Schools' Foundation Dollars for Scholars will sponsor a shred truck on the corner of Front and Main streets in St. John Saturday, May 14, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Marlene Landers, foundation manager, said the service will not have a set price, but they hope customers will be willing to donate to benefit its S.T.E.A.M. Fund.

“The newly-established fund is intended to help high school students attend activities related to Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math,” Landers said.

“We want to be sure that no student is unable to attend because of financial reasons,” she said.

The shred truck activity will be new for St. John.

“As we were sitting around the table, we all realized we have stuff we need to shred, so we thought we'd give it a try,” Landers said. “It's right after the April 18 tax deadline, so people may have some paperwork they don't want to keep around,” she said. “It's a good opportunity for people to empty out some old records.”

The fund started with an initial $2,000 that was raised at the 20th anniversary dinner for the foundation in May of last year. The foundation will rely on donations to keep the fund stocked, similar to a savings account, and award students on an as-needed basis.

“We've got to have enough money to keep it going,” Landers said.

Landers added the goal Saturday is to raise $2,000 more in order to match the original investment.

Landers said Endicott resident Jamie Misner will have her white pickup at the Endicott school from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. to collect and haul papers from Endicott residents who might be unable to make it to St. John.

Those interested in donating to the fund can do so by mailing a check, noted to the SJE Schools' Foundation, Box 411, St. John, 99171.
