Sheriff's Reserve Association offering two scholarships

March 23, 2016

Scholarship details and applications from the Whitman County Sheriff's Office Reserve Deputy Association are available now. The organization plans to award two Whitman County high school students with scholarships totaling $500 for the first place winner and $250 for the second place winner.

According to the web page for the Whitman County Sheriff's Office Reserve Association, the scholarship awards “will be based on the applicant's involvement in their school and community, academic accomplishments and their response to the essay question regarding community involvement.”

Sheriff's Chaplain Ron McMurray said this scholarship has been offered “for a number of years” and has seen great applicants.

“I wish we could give everybody a first place because they are all just great,” said McMurray. “We get some really high quality people in every area responding. They're future leaders. That's what we're looking for.”

Two essay topics are available for the applicants' choice. The first is, “How does voluntary service in the community strengthen both the community and the individual within the community? How is this important to our small rural county and its citizens?” The second is, “What does the scholarship candidate think is the most positive or negative impact that law enforcement demonstrates to the community and why?”

McMurray said applicants will be scored in 10 areas and be graded accordingly with the points added up to determine first and second place winners.

“We look at the student's academic achievements,” he said. “We really look for a balance of achievements, service in the community and at school, clubs they are involved in both in school and in the community and what people say about them.”

A minimum GPA of 2.5 is required in order to receive the scholarship, and the association also asks for at least one letter of recommendation, no more than three, which details the student's involvement in both school and community. The scholarships are open to any Whitman County student, whether enrolled in public, private or home school.

Applications can be completed and then sent in by mail. They must be postmarked by April 30 in order to be considered. Applications can be sent to:
