ROGER E. SWALLEY

Roger E. Swalley, 70, a longtime Colfax area resident, died March 11, 2016, in Colfax. No services are planned at this time.

He was born Sept. 28, 1945, in Lewiston, Idaho, to Carl and Erma (Bonham) Swalley. His father was a merchant marine so the family moved many times while he was growing up. They moved from California to St. Maries, Idaho, where Roger graduated from high school in 1963. He attended the University of Idaho before enlisting in the Air Force. He trained in California and Georgia before his deployment to Korea, where he worked rigging huge parachutes for large equipment drops. After receiving an honorable discharge from the service, he returned to the University of Idaho, where he studied plant sciences. He met Susan Kay Brooks while there, and they were married Dec. 27, 1966, in Payette, Idaho.

They lived in rural Moscow until an accident forced them to move closer to town in 1973. They moved in 1975 to a piece of land which had been owned by his grandparents along the Snake River. He built their “dream home” which he spent many years perfecting. He loved to work on the land, especially cutting fire wood. He was more at home in nature than in town. He planted and tended many trees on the property and also tended five acres of boysenberries and supplied them for area markets.

Mr. Swalley worked for several years as a mail contractor and later he did work along the river as a wildlife habitat contractor. He also attended rental properties they owned in Clarkston. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, skydiving, reading and watching television.

Surviving are his wife, Sue, at their home; two sons, Kenneth (Karlene) Swalley, Ferndale and Douglas (Michele) Swalley Colfax; a sister, Twila Skye VanHee, Yakima and three grandchildren.

Bruning Funeral Home of Colfax is in charge of the arrangements and condolences for the family can be left there.
