Hog Heaven band

to play at Dahmen

The Hog Heaven Big Band, a 16-piece swing band, will play tunes from the Great American Songbook at Artisans at the Dahmen Barn Saturday, Oct. 26, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. This will be the last performance for the band at the barn this year. Admission is $8 for a couple and $5 for a single.

Noon concert set

for WSU jazz fest

A free, public jazz concert at noon Wednesday, Nov. 6, in Bryan Hall will highlight the day-long WSU jazz festival.

Sixteen visiting high school and middle school jazz bands from Washington and Idaho will perform and participate in clinics in Kimbrough Hall during the 21st annual event.

The noon concert will feature saxophonist and WSU alumnus Patrick Sheng, director of jazz studies at McNeese State University. He will perform with the award-winning WSU Jazz Big Band and faculty soloists.

The faculty ensemble Jazz Northwest will conclude the festival in an afternoon concert in Kimbrough. The group includes saxophonists Greg Yasinitsky and Dave Hagelganz, trumpeter David Turnbull, pianist Brian Ward, guitarist Brad Ard, bassist Dave Snider and drummer Dave Jarvis.

A jam and after-party with Sheng on saxophone will be 9-11 p.m. at Rico’s 200 E. Main St., Pullman for those age 21 and over.

Classical guitarist

will play at Neill

Neill Public Library’s concert series will wrap up Oct. 24 with a performance by Peter Fletcher in the Hecht meeting room beginning at 5:30 p.m. This concert is part of a nationwide tour to promote Fletcher’s new Edvard Grieg CD.

Also on the program is Diary of a Camino by the American composer Jeremy Gill. The final work on the program will be Fletcher’s transcription of Paganini’s dazzling Caprice no. 24.

CLUBS & YOUTH GROUPS

Thrifty Grandmothers

Eighteen members and one guest attended the club’s October meeting last week. One new member was installed.

The club approved a $5,000 donation to the Colfax and Community Fund.

Three members of the Colfax FFA were present. Sarah Appel recited the FFA Creed. She, Tyson Rogers and Cody Miller will attend the FFA National Convention in Louisville, Ky. The grandmothers donated $750 toward expenses for their trip.

Other donations included the Palouse Empire Fair Foundation, $500 and items for their auction; Colfax High School musical, $500; a woman taking a mission trip to Brazil, $250.

The November meeting will be at the Church of the Nazarene.

Athenaeum

Thirteen members met Oct. 18 at the home of Mae Schultz for the fall business meeting. The constitution and by-laws were read and committee reports made.

The “Welcome to Colfax” sign at the west end of the Walla Walla highway bridge came from a bequest to the club in the will of Evelyn Hickman, a longtime club member.

This year’s program will consist of presentations on America’s cities. Cathy Ensley spoke to the group about her visits to the borough of Manhattan. The next meeting will be on Nov. 1 at the home of Mary Ann Wigen.

Hospital Auxiliary

A potluck dinner preceded the monthly meeting Oct. 7 in the meeting room of the hospital administration annex with 18 members and two guests in attendance. Mimi Ellis presented hospital updates. The construction happening at the hospital is proceeding as planned.

Flu shots will be offered again this year to volunteers in the Bluebird Gift Shop. Anyone volunteering without an immunization will be required to wear a mask for their safety and the customers safety. She thanked the auxiliary for everything they do to support of the hospital.

The Christmas luncheon will be at the Methodist Church Dec. 2 with a gift exchange for those who wish to participate. The auxiliary will provide favors for patient trays during the holidays.

Next regular meeting will be Nov. 4 at 1:30 in the annex meeting room.

BIRTHS

Lordan, Ruby Jean, was born Sept. 10 at Sacred Heart Medical Center at six pounds, 11 ounces, to Dee and Tara Lordan of Spokane. Grandparents are Carla and Bryan Bezdicek of St. John, Royce and Lisa Taylor of St. John and Denny and Laurie Lordan of Spokane. Great-grandparents are Shirley Brannan of St. John, Rosemary Taylor of Diamond, Kay Herndon of Spokane and Dick and Kay Krutch of Bainbridge Island. Great-great-grandparent is Lydia Christensen of St. John.
