Pie contest set

at Dahmen barn

The seventh annual pie baking contest at Dahmen Barn in Uniontown will be Sunday, Sept. 15, as part of the free-to-the-public “Old Fashioned Sunday in Autumn” event.

Entries must be delivered to the barn on Saturday, Sept. 14, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. or on Sunday between 8 and 9 a.m.

Competition entries must be apple or apple in combination with another fruit; cream or custard pies are not allowed. First and second place awards will be given to the best apple and the best apple combination pie. Prizes are gift baskets with gift certificates and Shepherd’s Grain flour. Bakers may enter both categories and are encouraged to submit more than one pie. There is no entry fee, but pre-registering by contacting coordinator Julie Hartwig is appreciated:

There will be a demonstration of home made ice cream and a local farmer will have fresh produce and pesto for sale.

Goedde will sign

book at Dahmen

Harry Goedde, who grew up in Uniontown and now lives in Spokane, will sign copies of his book, “From the Depression Into WWII,” Sunday, Sept. 15 at Dahmen Barn from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The book is filled with adventures of a young boy without supervision or discipline during the Depression years in Uniontown.

Drafted during the war, his commanders eventually gave him the choice of a court martial or shipping out to the 76th Infantry Division which was getting ready to go overseas. He chose the latter, understanding that eventually he would end up a frontline soldier.

‘Grease’ auditions

set for tonight

Regional Theatre of the Palouse will have auditions Sept. 12 to cast roles for its fall production of Grease at the RTOP Theatre from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in Pullman. Those auditioning should prepare a short song in their vocal key and bring sheet music for the accompanist.

Both principal and ensemble roles are still available to be cast. All performers should be 16 and older. RTOP is also looking for an assistant stage manager and sound crew.

The show will run Nov. 7-17 with rehearsals starting Sept. 23.

Historic barn

meet set today

in Spokane

Owners of historic barns are encouraged to attend a workshop on Heritage Barn Restoration today, Thursday, Sept. 12, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Spokane City Council chamber at city hall. The state Department of Archeaeology & Historic Preservation established a heritage barn register. Owners of barns more than 50 years old that retain a significant degree of historic integrity can nominate their barn to be designated as a heritage barn and included on the state register. They will be able to apply for matching grants to assist with stabilization and rehabilitation projects.

Chris Moore, field director with the Washington Trust for Historical Preservation will be present that afternoon to discuss the program.

The next deadline for nominating a barn for the register is Oct. 1. Deadline for funding applications is Oct. 28.

CLUBS & YOUTH GROUPS

Hospital Auxiliary

First meeting of the Whitman County Hospital Auxiliary was Tuesday, Sept. 3, in the administration annex meeting room at the hospital.

Debbie Glass, hospital CEO, informed the group of the changes related to the Obama Health Care plan. Enrollment will start Oct. 1. More information will be available soon. The hospital will again offer influenza shots to auxiliary members.

They decided to have guest day at the Oct. 7 meeting. They will have a potluck at 1 p.m. Members are encouraged to bring a guest.

Birthdays for July, August and September were noted. Diane Clark furnished refreshments.

Thrifty Grandmothers

Nineteen members attended the September meeting. Five new grandmothers were accepted into the club. The $5 bag day last week was very successful.

Donations included $500 for school supplies, $750 for a late emergency scholarship request and $395 to pay an overdue water bill for an Albion resident.

The next meeting will be Oct. 14.
