LaCrosse-Washtucna tennis players advance to districts

The LaCrosse-Washtucna tennis team will play Thursday and Friday at the 1B/2B District 9 Tournament in Spokane.

Competing at West Valley High School will be three singles players and one doubles team.

At the No. 4 seed is L/W’s two-year No. 1 boys singles player Justin Wargo, who will aim to make a return to regionals.

L/W’s No. 1 girls player, sophomore Lura Potter, has also qualified for districts, along with sophomore Brooklyn Hostetler. The doubles team of senior Chelsie Kneale and junior Amber McKaleb are a No. 3 seed for districts.

Last year, Wargo made it to the state tournament (top 16 in state) but did not place.

He hopes to be there again in his last May for the Tigercats.

“The kids I play against, they’re more tennis players and I’m the athlete,” said Wargo. “So that’s what I’m up against.”

One opponent he may run into at districts is senior Zach Swanger of Ritzville, who Wargo has traded victories with the past two years. Last May, Wargo advanced past him to state.

The top four finishers at districts qualify for the regional tournament.

LaCrosse-Washtucna’s league consists of 1B/2B schools, including Lind-Ritzville, Davenport, Odessa-Harrington, Wilbur-Creston and St. George’s.
