Colfax girls take No. 3 ticket to Sunnyside Regional

Gazette Editor

After again bowing to the unflappable Reardan Indians Friday at the Walla Walla Dietrich Dome, Colfax girls locked up a state ticket Saturday night when they again stopped the LRS Broncos in an elimination game, 51-29. The consolation win put the Bulldogs in line for a third- or fourth-place out of the two-week NE-SE scramble and sent Colfax back to Walla Walla Monday. They dropped the DeSales Irish 41-22 to finish number-three in the last NE-SE.

That will put the Bulldogs on the road to Sunnyside where they will play White Swan in the state’s 16-round elimination Friday at 8 p.m.

DeSales, the lone SE team to advance out of the sub-regional, will make the long haul to Mountlake Terrace for their chance in the 16 round.

Reardan and Northwest Christian again booked the top two playoff slots and will return to Mt. Spokane for the state 16 elims there.

Monday against DeSales, Colfax pegged a 25-13 lead at the half, weathered an Irish charge after the break and then pulled out the 41-22 finish with the defense blanking DeSales in the last quarter. Colfax booked a run of 11 unanswered points with Nicole Sheer hitting her second three-point shot to cap off the run.

Colfax trailed early in the game, but Amara Huber came off the bench and hit a pair of toss shots to break out the first Colfax lead, 10-6, and the stayed on top for the rest of the game.

Saturday against the Broncos, Colfax tagged a 10-6 lead after a defensive battle in the first quarter with Huber taking a steal all the way to the bucket to close it out. Senior Amelie Bruya, who rolled an ankle late in the Friday semi against Reardan, hit three 3-pointers while doing limited duty in the first half to help launch the Bulldogs. Nicole Sheer with 11 points and Huber and Taylor Larson each with 10 balanced out the Colfax offense.

Each team booked 17 fouls in the floor battle, but Colfax collected 10 more points off the toss line. They also out-boarded the Bronco girls by 10.

LRS Coach John Galbreath cleared off the Bronco bench to allow his reserves a little game time in the final minute of the LRS season. Sophomore Jenna Bennett led LRS with 12 points.

Colfax booked the Saturday win for a state 16 ticket after again being turned back Friday by Reardan’s veteran club. Reardan took control in the second quarter and kept an edge for the rest of the game. The solid show by the Indians contrasted with their escape from a Colfax charge in the second league round.

Kelsey Moos Friday led Reardan with 24 points. She hit all eight of her buckets inside the three where the Indians dominated.

Fouls took a toll on the Bulldogs with three starters picking up their third foul before the half.
