He earned a degree in ministerial studies at Phillips University in Enid, Okla., and went on to complete 156 semester hours of graduate work at Butler University, University of Indiana, University of Tulsa, University of Idaho, Washington State University and Eastern Washington State College. He went on to pastor at Christian Churches including ones in Langdon and Pittsburg, Kansas; Brooklyn, Indiana; and Palouse, Colfax and Garfield.

He lived in Palouse were he was a fifth and sixth grade teacher. He found many creative ways to help his students with the learning process, including inventing teaching machines he hand-made with parts he took from pinball machines. He enjoyed reading, fishing, working with the Boy Scouts, backpacking, camping and gardening. He was quick to master new skills: repairing engines and appliances, carpentry and electrical work, and his favorite of all - photography. As a proud young father, he often smelled of chemicals as he emerged from his darkroom with yet another creative picture in hand.
