Glenn Voshell

The memorial service to celebrate the life of Glenn David Voshell, 44, Pullman, will be today, Thursday, Dec. 17, at 1:30 p.m. at the School Gymnasium in Colton. He died Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009 from injuries sustained in a fall during a hunting trip outside of Colton.

Born March 6, 1965, in Vancouver, to Billy and Anne Marie Peterson Voshell, he grew up in LaCenter where he graduated from high school. He was active in both basketball and baseball while in high school. Following graduation he attended Clark College in Vancouver and went on to Washington State University where he received his bachelor degree in biology and his master’s degree in chemistry.

He began his teaching career at Brewster and taught there for several years before coming to Colton where he was a science teacher. He made his home in Pullman since that time. He coached the Science Olympiad Team for Colton and was a member of the Science Olympiad State Board. He coached both the boys and girls basketball teams at Colton and taught drivers education.

He married Sheila Askelson June 10, 1989. The couple was together for 10 years and later divorced. He married Tammi Escalle April 27, 2002 and they too later divorced. Glenn enjoyed the outdoors and all it offered especially hunting and fishing and was a member of Ducks Unlimited. He was a skilled carpenter, remodeling homes around the Palouse. Glenn especially was fond of his dogs through the years.

Surviving are his children Trevor, Kirsten, Rachel and Lauren Voshell, all of Pullman; his parents, Billy and Anne Marie Voshell; his brothers Les and Arlen Voshell, all of Ridgefield;

Lyle Honn

Funeral services for Lyle C. Honn, 55, Endicott area ag pilot and farmer, were Saturday morning, Dec. 12, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Endicott. Burial followed at the Endicott Cemetery.

He died Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, following an accident at his shop.

Born April 2, 1954, in Colfax to Floyd and Bertie Judson Honn, he grew up on the family farm between Endicott and Benge.

He graduated from Endicott High School in 1972, and attended Spokane Community College where he received a certificate in aircraft mechanics.

He owned and operated Honn Aviation and flew many hours as an Ag pilot over the next 27 years. He married Clara McKenzie in 1976. They made their home near the family farm along the Adams -Whitman County line. They were divorced after eleven years.

An avid hunter, he enjoyed target practice and was an excellent marksman. He was always reading and studying about different ways to do things and had a large library. He enjoyed gun-smithing, anything about airplanes, and doing mechanic work around the farm including car diagnostics work with a computer. He recently took up the hobby of machining on a metal lathe. He was also a reserve Whitman County Sheriff’s deputy.

In 2003, he invited a neighbor, Janet Hedlund, to be friends and the couple have been significant others since then.

He is survived by his three children, Greg (Trisha) Honn, Endicott; Dana (Kevin) Tastet, Amsterdam, Netherlands, and Denise Honn of Las Vegas; his significant other, Janet Hedlund, at the home, her three daughters, Jennifer Simpson, Spangle; Jacki Tyler of Phoenix and Jamie Hedlund of Garfield; two sisters, Louise Groat of Pomeroy and Elaine Cone of Kennewick; his parents, Floyd and Bertie Honn, Endicott, and three grandchildren.

Norton correction

Because of incorrect information provided to the Gazette, last week’s obituary for John Norton, 93, retired Oakesdale area farmer, incorrectly reported he was survived by five listed siblings. They actually preceded him in death.

The funeral for Mr. Norton was Dec. 9 at the Oakesdale cemetery. Surviving are two sons, Kenneth Norton of Oakesdale and William Norton of Phoenix, Ariz .; two daughters, Theresa (Roger) Pfaff of Garfield and Melissa (Jerry) Hanley of Palouse; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Charles Jordan

A funeral service for Charles Wesley Jordan, 89, long time Winona area rancher, was Monday, Dec. 14, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Endicott. The Rev. Dennis Nickel officiated and burial followed at the Winona Cemetery.

Mr. Jordan died last Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2009, at Whitman Hospital in Colfax. For the last seven years, he resided in Endicott with his daughter and son-in-law, Charlene and Spencer Nunn.

Born May 12, 1920, to Charles, Sr. and Elizabeth Catherine Aubrey Jordan, he grew up on the family farm north of Winona and graduated from Winona High School in 1939.

He married Betty Hawk in Spokane, Sept. 6, 1947. The couple farmed about seven miles north of Winona. He enjoyed working on the cattle and wheat ranch, and he also liked wood-working and feeding the wild birds that congregated around his home.

He was a member of the Endicott Seventh-day Adventist Church. Charlie was well known around the area for his collection of hats, most with furry animals on them. He loved cats and dogs and animals of all kinds and spending time with his grandchildren.

Surviving are three children, Peggy Roth of Paradise, Calif .; Charlene Nunn, Endicott, and Chuck Jordan, Winona; a brother, Don Jordan, St. John, and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, in 1983 and a daughter, Candy Reyes.

Emanuel Gomez Mendoza

Funeral services for Emanuel G. Mendoza, 83, Tekoa, were Tuesday morning, Dec. 15, at the Tekoa Community Church. Burial followed at Goldenrod Cemetery in Tekoa. Mr. Mendoza, a resident of Tekoa since 1981, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2009, at his Tekoa home.

Born Dec. 23, 1925, at Sidney, Mont., to Maxilian and Julia Gomez Mendoza, he attended schools at Lincoln, Idaho. Mr. Mendoza had worked for several years as a farm laborer in the Pacific Northwest, and later for the railroad in the Seattle area. He was employed at Pacific Crown Lumber Co. in Plummer, Idaho, as a grader and trimmer for 15 years. He retired in 1987. Following his retirement, he continued to make his home in Tekoa.

Survivors include his companion of 27 years, Rebecca Choate, at the Tekoa home; three sons, Manuel Mendoza of Kalispell, Mont .; Philip Mendoza of Yakima and Anthony Mendoza of Ohio; three daughters, Kathy Perez of Tacoma; Pamela Reese of Seattle and Patricia Mendoza of Renton; a brother, Pablo Mendoza and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Mendoza, in 1999.

Memorial gifts may be given to the American Cancer Society for Leukemia research, to the Tekoa Ambulance Fund, or to the Intensive Care Unit at Valley General Hospital.

Bruce E. Nearing

Bruce E. Nearing, 84, a resident of Palouse, died Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, at the Pullman Regional Hospital in Pullman from a heart attack. A memorial service will be conducted at a later date.

Born on Aug. 12, 1925, at Kellogg, Idaho, to William and Mae Hakola Nearing, he attended the Silver King School at Kellogg. He joined the United States Army Nov. 24, 1943, and served in the Pacific Theater. He was discharged April 7, 1946.

He married Mary Lou Hill Dec. 7, 1946, at Superior, Mont., and they made their home at Tekoa. He was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad as a brakeman for two years.

He later was employed by Washington Water Power at Tekoa, from 1951 until 1970 when he was transferred to Spokane. Bruce worked as a lead inspector for the company and retired in 1987 after 36 years with the company.

He was an avid fisherman and hunter and spent summers at Lake Mary Ronan, Mont. He was a member of the Trail Blazers, American Legion in Spokane, Tekoa Kiwanis and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Lou, at the home in Palouse; two sons, Monty (Bev) Nearing, Palouse; Jeff (Pam) Nearing, Rockford; one daughter, Debbie (Dick) Brown, Oakesdale; two sisters, Maxine Rantanen, Spokane; Elva (Gordon) Meredith, Rexburg, Idaho; two brothers, Rich (Sandra) Nearing and Jerry (Pat) Nearing, both of Pinehurst, Idaho; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
