Larry L. Dickerson

A memorial service for Larry Lee Dickerson, 73, former St. John mayor and long-time manager of St. John Telephone Co., was Wednesday afternoon in the St. John Community Center. Mr. Dickerson died last Friday, Aug. 21, 2009.

Born June 9, 1936, to Hollis and Lady Fae Dickerson at the family home in Ewan, he attended Ewan School until eighth grade and then attended St. John High School. He graduated with the class of 1954.

After high school he served in the Air Force National Guard. He married Mavis Lowe Nov. 4, 1956, in St. John and they had four children.

He was then employed by Palouse Ammonia in the early 1960s before he began his career with St. John Telephone Co. in 1964. During his years as manager, the company moved from rotary dial to digital fiber optics. He also convinced the board to add cable television service in 1980. Mr. Dickerson was awarded the Washington Independent Telephone Association’s Pioneer Award in 2004 in conjunction with his retirement.

He served on the St. John city council and was mayor of St. John from 1988 until 2003. He also served on the St. John School Board, and Community Club. He was a volunteer fireman, and a member of the St. John Golf and Country Club. He enjoyed golf and his career highlight was when he shot a double eagle on the fourth hole at St. John when it was still a six-hole course.

Larry loved all sports and attended two LA Dodgers World Series games with Dave Johnstone and his step-father, Marion Patterson. He enjoyed fishing and hunting trips with his children, and watching his grandchildren compete in sporting events.

Surviving are two daughters; Teri Dickerson of Spokane and Tami (Dan) Church, Lewiston; two sons, Larry (Toni) Dickerson, Vancouver; and Todd (Becky) Dickerson, St. John; a brother, Homer Dickerson, Cheney; two sisters, Retha Lucas, Cheney, and Virginia Clarno, and seven grandchildren.

The family suggests memorial donations be made to the Larry L. Dickerson and Lady Fae Dickerson Memorial Scholarship at the SJE Schools Foundation, Box 411, St. John, 99171.

Edwin A. Johnson

A memorial service Edwin A. “Ed” Johnson, 77, Colfax resident, will be Saturday, Aug. 29, at 4 p.m. at the Onecho Bible Church. Graveside services with Military Honors will precede the memorial at the Colfax Cemetery at 2:30 p.m.

Mr. Johnson died Aug. 23, 2009 at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane of injuries sustained in an automobile accident July 29 on Highway 195 near Rosalia.

Born in Colfax Nov. 24, 1931, to Cecil A. and Lilla Allenbach Johnson, he was raised on the family farm and attended Colfax schools. A member of the 1950 class at Colfax High School, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, from 1952 until 1954 when he received his honorable discharge.

He married Eileen Haxton of Colfax Oct. 29, 1955, and they farmed at Onecho until he retired in 2001. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing, hunting and boating and he was fan of both high school and WSU sports, especially football and basketball. He also enjoyed dancing and listening to country music, and was devoted to family, especially to spending time with his grandkids. He attended the Onecho Bible Church, was a member of the Hiram Masonic Lodge in Colfax and served as Fire District 13 Commissioner and on the board for Almota Elevator Co.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eileen, on Dec. 30, 2008.

Surviving are his children Diana (Patrick) Fennie, Tucson, Ariz .; Lori (George) Mohr, Seattle; and Aaron (Helena) Johnson, Colfax; a sister Joan Schrenk, and two grandsons.

Memorials are suggested to the Shriners Hospital for Children in Spokane; Whitman Hospital Auxiliary; or the American Heart Association.

James D. McMannis

A graveside service for James Daniel McMannis, 88, retired Colfax attorney, will be Monday, Aug. 24, at 11 a.m. in the Colfax Cemetery. The Rev. Bob Ingalls will officiate.

Mr. McMannis died Aug. 17, 2009, at the Waterford Rehab Center in Spokane.

Born Aug. 16, 1921, at Tekoa, to James and Rosa Bippes McMannis, he attended Tekoa schools and graduated from Tekoa High School where he was active in athletics. He was an avid hunter and fisherman starting at a young age.

He married Nina Mae Hyde, and served as an artillery instructor in the U.S. Army during World War II. After receiving his honorable discharge he attended Gonzaga University and Gonzaga Law School. After receiving his law degree, they moved to Colfax where he practiced law until his retirement in 1984.

James and Nina had two children and were later divorced.

He was active in Colfax Jaycees, the Masonic Lodge, Kiwanis, and Rotary, and he served as a Colfax volunteer fireman.

He married Mildred Organ Elliott in 1968. He enjoyed taking care of his rose gardens, hiking, fishing, boating, photography, painting, playing bridge, and traveling.

They spent the winter months in California. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred, in 2001.

Surviving are a son, Dan McMannis, Millfield, Ohio; a daughter, Chris Stasak, Puyallup; two step-daughters, Lynda Anderson of Farmersville, Calif., and Wendy Lago, Kettle Falls; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Whitman Hospital Foundation.
