Lamont With the nearest tennis courts being 30 miles away, it is hard to believe that tennis is thriving in the little town of Lamont, but it is. Lind/Ritzville/Sprague (LRS) just competed in the District 7 and 9 tournament and eight of their players qualified for regionals, five of whom live in Lamont. Lamont Friends of the Lamont Library with Ruth Simpson at the helm conducted a book sale in the new Lamont Library June 22-24. It included a bake sale and a raffle. Gale Mann won the grand prize, an Afghan and hand crochet slippers. Proceeds will be used to finish the plumbing, electrical wiring and the framing in the building. They are planning a spaghetti feed around the end of July to further the work in hopes of opening the library in November. Grants and donations will help with the completion. Lamont Nita Polda June 20 hosted a group of 14 Sprague-Lamont Red Hat Ladies on a trip to Ritzville. They had lunch at the Cow Creek Mercantile and toured the Frank R. Burroughs house. Making the trip were Mary Anderson, Bea Butler, Diane Cook, Anita Frederick, Marcia Landers, Jean Meyers, Shirley Miller, Nita Polda, Pat Peterson, Mary Ruud, Claudette Sharp, Kathy Sheilds, Betty Stone and Nita Vold. Lamont Sandi Swannack and Steven Engles along with their friend, Keith Pigott from Tacoma, recently traveled to Alaska to hunt coastal black bears. They flew into Ketchikan and then boarded a DeHavilland Beaver float plane for the trip to Prince of Wales Island. They rented a Suburban and drove to Craig, Alaska, where they stayed at the Kingfisher Lodge. They hunted with the Suburban for the first few days and then changed to a 16 foot skiff. Lamont Art Swannack left March 4 for Washington D.C. to attend the Washington Farm Bureau DC Days event. On Monday morning the group attended an American Farm Bureau briefing on the issues of labor, youth employment in ag, trade and the current status of Farm Bill negotiations. Lamont Art and Jill Swannack traveled to Scottsdale, Ariz., Jan. 24-29 to attend the American Sheep Industry convention. Art is a member of the national executive board and is in charge of the Resource Management council, which covers issues such as public grazing, predator management and targeted grazing (controlling weeds and other undesirable plants using sheep grazing). Lamont Kathy Shields along with her daughter and son, Billie Jo Davison and Ed Shields, flew to Orlando, Fla., Nov. 6 where they met up with Kathy’s sister Elaine Nave and family David and Lisa Nave and Ann and Mark Sondergard. The group drove to Marritt Island where they rented a house with five bedrooms, a pool and boat dock and could watch porpoises and manatee. Lamont Kathy Shields attended her Cheney High School class of 1951 60-year reunion Sept. 19, 20 and 21 at the Northern Quest Casino. Twenty-four classmates out of the class of 49 attended. Lamont Bonnie Swannack recently attended a luncheon at the Red Lion in Riverfront Park for 26 of her classmates that graduated from The Deaconess School of Nursing 50 years ago. Judy Pagnotti from Mountlake Terrace, also a graduate with Bonnie, drove over and attended the luncheon and spent a few days visiting the Swannacks. Lamont School has received an $80,000 grant to complete three projects at the school. Lamont Art Swannack traveled to Denver last Thursday for the spring American Sheep Industry (ASI) board meeting. This is the meeting when all the national council and committee assignments are decided upon. Art was appointed chair of the Resource Management Council, which oversees natural resource, predator and public lands issues for ASI.
