  • U-POP brings the music

    Ukulele Players of the Palouse provided a unique Christmas concert at the Center for the Colfax Christmas Festival. Ten members of the group played Christmas music for an hour at the Center starting at 5 p.m. after the Christmas parade. Cookies and punch were available to those who attended the gathering which followed an afternoon visit by Santa Claus at the Center.   • UMC tree wins contest

    The decorated tree entered by the United Methodist Church won the first Christmas Tree Festival contest Saturday. The UMC tree was among 13 entered in the tree decorating festival which started two weeks ago. Voting continued during the Santa reception and ukulele concert at the Center Saturday evening. Chamber members kept the tree display open from 5 to 7 p.m. on weeknights to allow residents to see the trees and cast a vote for eight days.... Full story

  • Thorn traffic update reviewed

    Colfax council members Monday night gave mixed reviews to the revamping of the intersection of Highway 195 and Thorn Street. The state Department of Transportation crew installed traffic control posts to funnel northbound traffic on Highway 195 into one lane. The aim of the project is to keep northbound traffic out of the curbside lane which has been marked off with a solid white line. Horlacher, 85, former farm woman in the Latah and Rosalia areas, died Dec. 10, 2014, in Spokane. The family plans a celebration of life in early summer. She was born Jan. 14, 1929, in Kotzebue, Alaska. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Stanley C.     Librarian Nichole Kopp delivers book donations to Jim Krouse at the Colfax Fire Department for the Firemen's Toybox project. Friends of Whitman County Library provided a drop site at the Colfax Branch for new books and toys for the annual drive hosted by the Colfax Fire Department.     Colfax Electro Squidettes robotics team brought home two trophies from the regional qualifying competition Dec. 7 at Glover Middle School in Spokane. They won trophies for presentation and games which qualified them for the Eastern Washington championship competition Jan. 16 at Ellensburg.     Colfax Jr./Sr. High School FCCLA Chapter collected donations to make the Amenity Bags in contribution to the 2014 Giving Tree. These Amenity Bags consist of toothpaste, toothbrushes, bars of soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion and a wash cloth. They are distributed to Developmentally Disabled Adults throughout Whitman County as Christmas presents. Many people in our community continually donate for this project.     The Rural Alliance High School Art Show will come to the Colfax Library Jan. 10-23 during open hours. This exhibit features the creative works of middle and high school students from Whitman County. The art show committee would like to invite area teens age 12-19 not already participating through their school to submit an art project. The submitted original work may include paintings, drawings, pottery and collage.     Robert and Norma Lewis of Garfield will mark their 60th wedding anniversary Dec. 26. Robert, from Steptoe, and Norma, from Garfield, were married in Coeur d' Alene Dec. 26, 1954. They moved to Sonora, Calif., where he began his career as a concrete finisher. They returned to the Palouse in 1956 and settled in Garfield.
