    Big store Black Friday strikes again. It follows the tradition of early openings with the biggest price cuts for the first to arrive uninjured. Some retailers tried to get the jump on other retailers by being open on Thanksgiving Day. These openings may never catch on because the traditional stampedes are missing. A lot of shoppers view out of town Black Friday as a special outing and adventure. Some people just like contact shopping.     The 2015 General Election was certified Tuesday by Auditor Eunice Coker, Prosecutor Denis Tracy and County Commissioner Dean Kinzer. Three levies narrowly failed in the vote count. The Tekoa proposition one, a $50,000 property tax levy for street operation and maintenance, failed by just a few votes, earning 58.6 percent yes votes to just miss the required 60 percent for passage.   • Tekoa city council considers uses for former JC club

    A new use for the Tekoa Community Center is under consideration after the subject was talked about by the city council Nov. 16. The building was leased by the Jaycees Club until 2010, when the city, which has long owned it, took it over as a community center.   • Needs survey report reflects lack of dental care, access

    Pullman Regional Hospital released the results of the 2015 Whitman County Community Needs Assessment Nov. 19, finding that county residents are in need of affordable dental care and access to preventive medical care. The survey, in which more than 1,000 people participated online or through the mail, was completed last spring and included 266 questions about quality of life, economic development, employment, health, housing, food security and use of social services.     The annual Palouse Area Networking Breakfast took place Nov. 4 at Gladish Community Center with 93 people in attendance representing Whitman and Latah counties.     Colfax Chamber of Commerce has debuted a “Passport to Colfax” campaign to encourage shopping in Colfax. The passport allows those who shop locally to qualify for a drawing to win Colfax gift cards from the Chamber Tree which will be housed at The Center. This can be accomplished by collecting six stamps from local businesses by eating, shopping or receiving services locally.     Descendants of Tekoa’s EWU football legend William P. “Bink” Wall met in the State 2B quarterfinal playoff game between Napavine and Liberty Saturday at Centralia. Wall was an All-American linebacker at Eastern in late 1960s. After college, he had to forego a potential professional career with the Minnesota Vikings to fulfill his ROTC obligation. He was killed in Vietnam. Wall was one of 11 linebackers on EWU’s “top 100 players in 100 years of EWU football” and was inducted into the EWU hall of fame.     Olivia Hodge of Blacksburg, Va., signed a national letter of intent to compete in track and cross country for Radford University in Virginia. She is the daughter of Tom Hodge, a member of the 1984 class at Colfax High School. Hodge, during his high school years, was an outside shooter for the Bulldogs under Coach Bob Bafus. Olivia Hodge received her running skills from her mother, Jenny, who competed for the University of Virginia at Charlottesville where she was raised.     Coach Corey Baerlocher and the Colfax girls will start the basketball season Monday by hosting a three-team jamboree with Lakeside and Colton on the guest list. The action will feature 10-minute games with jayvee and varsity rounds. Colfax and Lakeside teams will be in the first round followed by Colton and Lakeside teams.   • Colfax district to seek two-year fund levy

    A replacement maintenance and operations levy will be on the ballot Feb. 9 for the Colfax School District. The district school board approved the proposal Monday night. It requests a $1.275 million collection in 2017 and $1.3 million in 2018. The first year's funds would be collected at a rate of $3.14 per thousand in assessed valuation while the second year would be at the rate of $3.16 per thousand.   • Crane needed to remove leaning tree after storm

    A section of N. Mill Street was blocked off Tuesday morning in Colfax for removal of a leaning fir tree which has been threatening two houses in the neighborhood. The tree is located on the northeast corner of the former Sanders house at 412 N. Mill. The house, which included six apartment units, has been vacant for approximately two years.   • Women's farm workshop set Dec. 4 at WSU Lewis Center

    The article, “Garfield’s Don Kriebel joins Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.” in the Nov. 12 edition of the Gazette reported 159 veterans took the trip. Actually, the total included 79 veterans and 80 guardians. Kriebel’s assigned guardian, Bill DeCarlo, a Spokane police officer, volunteered to go. He had never met Kriebel.     Shawn Elston and Suzanne Seigneur with the $3,000 donation check which SunEdison donated to COAST Transportation to purchase a used 2012 MV-1.
