Patrick A. Duncan, 53, a lifelong Tekoa area resident, died Nov. 16, 2017, at his rural Spokane County home. A private family memorial will be held at a later date. Born Oct. 1, 1964, at Spokane, he was raised by Robert and Joyce Trescott Towne. When Robert Towne died, Joyce married William Duncan, and the couple adopted Patrick. Friends of Whitman County Library received special recognition during the Washington Library Association Conference two weeks ago in Tacoma. Friends president Sue Hallett, center, accepted the award of merit along with library director Kristie Kirkpatrick, left, and youth services manager Sheri Miller. Friends of WCL are 600 members strong and volunteered more than 2,500 hours last year. They help fund library services, programs and facility renovations countywide.... Full story
The City of Tekoa has hired Century West as its town engineer for the next five years on all projects, except the airport. The longtime engineer for Tekoa, Century West was again approved by the city council Nov. 6, after considering statements from JUB, Keltic Engineering, TD&H Engineering, MD&A and Century West. Endicott Endicott Gun Club's fall meat shoot was Nov. 19. The group made their sausage on the preceding Friday at the Endicott Food Center and packaged it Saturday. The Shoot attracted many individuals who enjoyed sausage breakfast and lunch, along with shooting games and the best weather. A shooting salute for the late Chuck Hughes was held before the shoot began. Boomer, the African Serval cat and his owner, Anya Spielberg, made a special appearance at the Oakesdale Library on Nov. 13. Twenty-eight cat lovers learned about serval cats and also, most importantly, Boomer and Anya’s unique bond. Anya also brought CheyChey, an adult savannah, and two savannah kittens. Two Farmington girls and their mothers were honored guests at the October meeting of the American Association of University Women Palouse-Garfield Branch. Olivia Booth and Abigael Lobdell were among six local area girls sent by the Palouse-Garfield AAUW to this summer’s Tech Trek camp at Eastern Washington University. The meeting was in Garfield at the home of Yvonne Berliner, the branch vice president. Beth and Ryan Thorpe, along with daughter Savita and canine family member Jasmine, are on the Palouse for a visit. They hail from Gold Bar, Wash., and have ties to this area. Dusty Visitors of Steve and Fran Maki Tuesday through Thursday of last week were friends and co-alumni of the University of Idaho, Mike and Valerie Quesnell of Twin Falls, Idaho. The two couples toured the campus of the university, then went to the turkey dinner at the Methodist church in LaCrosse. A couple weeks ago this animal hung out at the farm and even helped to do a little yard work by eating the apples that had fallen on the lawn. I am a conservative; thus, I was pleased when the conservatives won in the last general election. I agreed with most of candidate Trump’s message but had serious doubts about the messenger. He got off to a horrible start. His tweeter made him look absolutely foolish. He made off-the-cuff statements without considering the ramifications. He made enemies that conservatives didn’t need. We are now beginning to feel the repercussions of his lack of diplomacy. He continues to be pillared in the press. Even Fox News is having trouble defending him...

Tax plan The GOP tax plan will crush the middle class, and it will decimate students’ educations. Cathy McMorris Rodgers won’t even address the bill with her own constituents. Ed Gillespie went from potential vindicator of Trumpism to "cuckservative" in the space of a couple of hours. The Virginia Republican, campaigning for governor in a treacherous political environment defined by an unpopular president of his own party, ran the only race he reasonably could. Football is everywhere. Games are scheduled throughout the weekend. The much anticipated Apple Cup is on Saturday. WSU meets UofW in Seattle. It promises to be a hard fought game. As we know, football is not a gentle sport. Players are helmeted and heavily padded to withstand the physical contact.
