Dusty Kathy Atwood, Los Angeles, has been visiting her mother, Kathleen Scholz, and her son Kevin Atwood since the beginning of November. A Garfield-Palouse FFA team topped 24 other state entries to win the state land judging contest last Wednesday at Valleyford. The win means Garfield/Palouse has remained undefeated in the state land judging contest for the third consecutive year. The Spokane Soil Conservation District hosted the state contest with 25 teams competing for the chance to attend the National Contest next spring in Oklahoma. Artisans at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown will hosting their fourth annual Holiday Gala Dec. 5 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. More than 30 artisans fill all three floors of the art center with one-of-a-kind gift items. In addition, there will be book signings by two local authors and live music. Plans for the 20th annual benefit dinner auction of Whitman Community Hospital Foundation were advanced last Wednesday in a meeting of the foundation board. The benefit will be Jan. 30 at Hill Ray. Tickets will go on sale on the first week of January, according to Carol Stueckle, coordinator of the event. The benefit will again plan to offer 20 live auction items and 20 silent bid items. Tekoa For the 34th year, members of Tekoa’s churches will join together for a Thanksgiving service. The year’s service is set for Sunday, Nov. 22, at 7 p.m. Sacred Heart Parish is the host church and joining with them for the evening will be Tekoa Community Church and the Tekoa Mountain Chapel. Boy scouts Gabe Ross, Garrett Korslund and Nolan Korslund, and parent Greg Korslund show off a portion of the food donations they collected as part of a Boy Scout food drive in Colfax. Saturday morning’s food bag collection weighed in at 1,938 pounds at the FISH food bank in the St. Patrick’s Parish Hall. Donations arriving too late to be weighed were estimated to have put the food drive over the 2,000-pound mark. A defense motion to dismiss a suit against the Town of Endicott was denied Nov. 10 in Whitman County Superior Court. Attorneys representing the town had asked the court to dismiss a damage suit filed by Jimmie Britton who alleges damages sustained when he stepped into a street utility hole in August of 2004. The court ruled Endicott officials should have been aware that the cover to the utility box had not been maintained in a reasonably safe condition. The ruling followed an Oct. 14 hearing. Despite a national slump, rural Whitman County booked a solid third quarter of construction activity between July 1 and Sept. 30 of this year. Dan Gladwill, county building official, reported Monday he had issued 71 building permits during the quarter – the same number he issued during third quarter 2008, which tied for the highest total for the decade. Four schools in the county are shaping up with some repairs this spring after being awarded state grants. Colton will replace its gym bleachers; Palouse will make repairs on its 1965 elementary school wing; Oakesdale will get a new roof on its 1957 building and St. John will replace parts of its boiler. With pride A bit of history records that the new Colton public school building opened in 1939 and that year’s class graduated in the new facility. My class of 1940 attended their full senior year and then graduated in the spring of that year.
