    Veterans Day was Sunday. The nation took a holiday Monday. Solemn ceremonies were conducted across the nation. Vets and soldiers shared personal stories with the country. Some were heart wrenching and some heart warming. Politicians, of course, jostled to declare how they had personally persevered to support vets.     Former Colton quarterback Josh Straughan continues to shine for Stillman College, an NCAA Division II school in Tucaloosa, Ala. A member of the 2012 class at Colton, Straughan was named the starting quarterback for Stillman after he led a comeback win when he was subsituted in the first game of the season. He then led a 37-12 win over Clark Atlanta University, completing 23 of 36 passes for 234 yards and four touchdowns.     A series of drive-killing first half turnovers by Tekoa/Oakesdale Friday night at Ritzville marked out an early end to the state playoff bid by the Nighthawks. The host Lind/Ritzville/Sprague Broncos rang up conversion points off the turnovers on the way to dominating the first three quarters of the game.   • Junior High mass concert brings 500 to Oakesdale

    A total of 500 junior high students filled the gym as part of junior high mass band and mass choir 2012, presented by Southeastern Washington Music Educators.   • Police arrest two suspects after break-ins on Main St.

    Two suspects were arrested Sunday in connection with burglaries of the Daily Grind and the Thrifty Grandmothers store in Colfax in the early morning hours last Wednesday. The officers report said doors to both businesses were pried open and cash was taken after containers were removed and smashed open behind the two buildings. One of the suspects is a 17-year-old Colfax juvenile, and the other suspect is Vance Mey, 19, Winona. Mey was arrested at the Whitman County jail where he had been booked Friday as a suspect in a domestic violence... Full story

    Colton’s Wildcats booked a solid run in the 1B show all the way up to the title game against the Nighthawks.     Tekoa/Oakesdale Nighthawks, the defending 1B champions, stacked up a 12-game run past four foes to defend their state title in the 1B net bracket Friday and Saturday at the SunDome.     Colfax High School is now into its first full school year with cameras monitoring students in common areas of the building. Supt.     Jennings Elementary student boy scouts follow a Fairchild Air Force base color guard into the gym at the start of the school’s Veteran’s Day assembly Nov. 9. The Rev. Floyd Overstreet was honored with a Quilt of Valor presentation at the veterans’ assembly at Jennings Elementary Friday. Overstreet, who is a Navy Veteran of World War II, was presented a quilt by Tami Drader, a member of the Whitman Sampler’s Guild in Colfax.     Eddy’s Restaurant in Colfax remained closed early this week after sustaining extensive damage last Thursday when it was struck by a car and truck involved in a collision at the intersection of Main and Thorn. The front door of the restaurant was destroyed and the wall and windows on the north side of the restaurant were smashed.   • Friday ballot update moves election tally to 71 percent

    Another 4,742 ballots were added to the general election tally in a second run of the ballots Friday afternoon. The total count moved to 15,105 for a turnout rate of just more than 71 percent. Whitman County returns continued to favor Rob McKenna who has now conceded the gubnatorial race to Democrat Jay Inslee. The vote here was 8,217 for McKenna and 6,333 for Inslee.     They had to bring in extra chairs from the Lions Club hall. In a packed Palouse city council meeting Tuesday night, citizens made their input known as the council voted down a proposal to cut the police staff to one and end their shared-police contract with Garfield.     After Washington voters legalized marijuana in last week’s election, Whitman County Prosecutor Denis Tracy said Tuesday he plans to offer plea deals to anyone facing misdemeanor possession charges.
