Palouse Empire Fair board members received a financial report which reflected the impact from the rain storm which doused the grounds on the last day of the fair. The fair’s gate revenues were down $4,692 from the previous year for a drop of about seven percent, and the attendance total was down 1,259 from the previous year. Staff members in the county elections office had received approximately 2,050 ballots for the Nov. 5 election as of Monday. They had about 1,600 processed as of Friday and another 450 arrived in the mail Monday. The return is just more than eight percent of the 25,220 ballots which were mailed out for the general election Oct. 18. On Oct. 17-19 Youth Outdoors Unlimited held one of its camps in Colfax to assist a child with their dream of deer hunting. Two camps were in Colfax this year. Founded in 2011, Youth Outdoors Unlimited is a central Washington based non-profit, giving those with life-threatening physical disabilities a chance to live their dream of hunting and fishing. The Palouse Fire Department bought three new oxygen cylinders following an early morning house fire Oct. 21. “So we can bring more air with us,” said Scott Beeson, fire chief. The quick-change cylinders are rated for 45 minutes of oxygen – while that varies depending on how active a firefighter is. A cylinder holds 4,500 pounds of air. Winter hours begin at Nez Perce National Historical Park visitor center beginning Sunday, Nov. 10. The visitor center will be open 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Washington State Department of Health sent out a reminder that House Bill 1074 goes into effect Jan. 1 when it will be illegal to sell tobacco and vapor products to anyone under 21. This reminder comes amid a state investigation into lung illness related to vaping which has identified 12 cases to date and a recent State Board of Health emergency rule banning the sale of flavored vapor products. New management is in place at Cornerstone on Main Street in Colfax. With new management, new changes are also being put in place. Memorial wreaths will be placed on graves of veterans buried in the Bethel Cemetery at Steptoe Dec. 14 as part of the national Wreaths Across America observance. This will be the second year of the observance at Steptoe. The cost to sponsor a wreath on a grave is $15. This money is due by Veteran's Day, Nov. 11., allowing enough time for the wreaths to be ordered and shipped for the ceremony. The early numbers for Haunted Palouse are in with total attendance of 3,590 over the four nights for a gross of $87,972. This year featured an increase in ticket price from $20 to $25. Three episodes of vandalism to an unoccupied house in northwest Pullman were alleged in an investigation report filed in superior court with formal charges against Cody J. Gludt, 20, Moscow. He has been summoned to appear in court Nov. 8 after charges were filed against him Oct. 17 by Chief Deputy Prosecutor Dan LeBeau.
