  • Pastor's Corner

    Oct 23, 2013

A Dark Valley I grew up fishing streams in the North Cascades. There is something about having grown up doing a particular activity that magnifies self-confidence. On one occasion it was over-confidence. It’s happened more than just this once, but this is the one that I’m admitting to now. At the time my schedule pretty much excluded fishing trips and I was starting to look longingly at any bit of water near the road. It was then that I researched the fishing opportunities on the Clear Fork of the Cowlitz on White Pass. It was secluded eno...

Editor’s Note: The following column was originally published in 2009. As frequent readers of this column know, I am a natural athlete who enjoys participating in a wide variety of sports, as long as I don’t have to be there in person. This is especially true during winter, so when my nephew informs me he wants to go ice skating, I’m only too happy to tell him he’s wrong. Here’s a little history: Ice skating was first invented sometime around 3,000 B.C. to make the game of hockey more dangerous. It was introduced to North America by the Swedes,...

  • Sculptures now greet visitors

    Oct 23, 2013

Metal sculptures on Highway 195 tell motorists of Uniontown’s past as an agricultural community and its present as an art place. On the north, in the field between Dahmen Barn and the highway, a larger-than-life cow moves her head in the wind, and at the south entry to town, a tractor made of parts from antique agricultural equipment pulls a wagon that features seasonal decorations and announcements of community events. The sculptures were created by Lewiston artist John Bergen whose jumping f... Full story

Do the research I would like to urge all voters to do their research on genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, in our food supply. The multi-national corporations that are throwing millions of dollars into a campaign against I-522 hope that we will be lazy and only listen to the words crafted by their self-interested marketing departments. There is abundant information out there. Here are a few examples: Later this week there is a free “GMO Mini Summit” teleconference featuring leading experts from the international community of phy...

Nancy Pelosi infamously said that we had to pass Obamacare to find out what’s in it. The then-House speaker erroneously assumed, evidently, that people would be able to get onto the government-run exchanges created by the law. So far the law’s implementation has been as ugly as its passage. The rollout of Obamacare has been so disastrous that even “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart was plainly mystified and unconvinced when Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius came on his show the other day to offer reassurances. Judging by the hap... Full story

In 1992, a single male sockeye salmon managed to swim 900 miles from the mouth of the Columbia River to Redfish Lake in Idaho’s Sawtooth Mountains, the end of his migratory journey. Biologists dubbed the sole survivor, “Lonesome Larry.” By 2010, the Northwest Power and Conservation Council happily reported record-setting runs for sockeye —nearly 387,000 had climbed the fish ladders at Bonneville Dam. The numbers, which fluctuate annually, stand at 186,000 this year. The resurgence of the sockeye is not unique. As of Oct. 9, more than one mil...

Here we go again. The two parties in the two houses of Congress recently came to an agreement to reopen government and to tackle the debt limit ceiling. The agreement gives the country a respite for a few months. It didn’t really solve anything. It just put the decision off for a while longer. To use the now over-used expression, Congress kicked the can down the road once again. The promise is that Congress will come together and generate answers and solutions with a greater shelf life than just a few months. Over these past excruciating years,...

Instead they went down 52-0. “It didn’t go the way we wanted,” said Eagles coach Steve Selk. The Knights led 40-0 at halftime. Wade West led for St. John-Endicott (2-5 overall) with 14 carries for 105 yards. West later took over at quarterback when Weston Whinery went out with an injured shoulder. • Knauff, Gar-Pal hold off Pomeroy

    Garth Meyer, Gazette Reporter|Oct 23, 2013

Vikings still in playoff hunt With his team down 38-30 to Garfield-Palouse at the break between the third and fourth quarter, Pomeroy coach Sanford Bates instructed his players. "No more running for 44. You’ve got to stop him," he demanded. Back on the field, on the next play Pomeroy senior lineman Cody LaMunyan stuffed Gar-Pal’s No. 44 – Kevin Knauff. "Let’s go D!" called out Bates. On the next snap, Knauff took the ball up the middle for a 40-yard touchdown. Later, with 4:08 left and Gar-Pal... Full story
