    Few regions of the world have more differing landscapes than the state of Washington, and the Rosalia Spartans saw almost all of them on the way to Taholah last Friday. Wheat country, arid flatlands, sagebrush foothills, cedar-covered mountains then coastline – it all led to their game site adjacent to the rainforests of Olympic National Park.   • Bulldog-Gorilla collision tonight

    A visit tonight by the Davenport Gorillas at Colfax is expected to key the playoff segment of the volleyball season. Colfax will host the Gorillas after posting a 5-0 league run and a 25-1 overall record. Davenport will arrive with a matching 5-0 mark. The Gorillas and Bulldogs had an introductory session a month ago in the title game of the Okanogan tournament.     Garfield City Clerk Annie Pillers will be leaving her position on Halloween. After six years serving the town at city hall, she will become the Executive Director for Friends of Hospice, a non-profit group serving Whitman County.     Five Pullman residents were honored Oct. 17 at the 96th Pullman Chamber of Commerce annual meeting and awards banquet at Banyan’s on the Ridge. Trent Maier and Brian Augdahl, owners of Whiskey Barrel Cider Company and The Cider House, were recognized as the Chamber Member of the Year.     When former Washington State Rep. Tom Foley died Friday, Oct. 18, it sparked a lot of memories for at least one Whitman County resident. Foley was 84 when he died in Washington, D.C. Foley served in the House of Representatives for 15 terms, from 1965 to 1994 and became Speaker of the House in 1989. He was also U.S Ambassador to Japan during the Clinton administration.   • Additions to library collection feature art of Marra, Russell

    Two items recently added to the Whitman County Library collection have local ties. ABCDelirious was written by Susan Russell who grew up in Colfax, and Color by Accident by Ann Johnston features the graphic design work of local artist Ann Marra. Russell recently participated in the Class of 1963 art exhibit at the library which was part of her class reunion. She was the featured guest for September’s Meet the Artist program.   • Prairie View School building moved to Waverly location

    The long-dormant Prairie View School building has been moved into the town of Waverly in a project which has been in the works for several years. The building was actually cut in sections then moved approximately five miles to a new foundation on a lot at the south end of Waverly.     A motion to stay the suspension of Nicolas Ratkowski from Washington State University was denied Friday in a superior court hearing. Ratkowski, who has an extended record of conduct violations going back to 2009, filed a motion for a court order to stay the suspension. Ratkowski’s motion, filed Oct. 9 by Tacoma attorney Charles A. Johnson, noted he has been scheduled to graduate in December. It added he now has a grade average of 3.15 as a criminal justice major and plans to apply to attend law school.     On Thursday, Oct. 17, at 10:17 a.m., people attending a meeting in the county’s Public Service Building were in an “earthquake.” Following Washington State Homeland Security Region 9 Coordinator Darrell Ruby’s instruction, the participants dropped on their hands and knees, got under tables and held on until Ruby gave an “all clear.” Students at Colfax High School also participated.     Whitman County elected officials and department managers received some unwelcome news about the 2014 budget Tuesday morning. Administrative director Gary Petrovich told commissioners during a budget discussion that the projected budget deficit is estimated at a little more than $1.3 million, a sum which equals one tenth of the 2013 budget.     Four homes are being built in Uniontown for individuals, couples and families with moderate incomes. Community Action Center in Pullman received a construction loan and is working with Community Frameworks to provide opportunities to first-time homebuyers, according to Sandy Martines, CAC Housing Assistant Program Manager.
