Dottie’s trip marks end to Americans in space If all goes as planned, Vancouver teacher-astronaut Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger will be on board Space Shuttle Discovery when it lifts off next March 10. It may be the last time she flies in space because the current shuttle flights end in 2010. The replacement orbiter, the Constellation, may not fly until 2014 at the earliest. The problem is federal funding and age. The current fleet of shuttles — Discovery, Endeavor and Atlantis — were built in the 1980s have flown more than 100 missions. In ad... Full story

Pioneer lady submariner dislikes female crews HAVING ONCE waged a battle with the Navy over its refusal to let me join male reporters in taking a submarine ride from Seattle to Everett, I feel entitled, if not qualified, to comment on the current push to let women sailors serve aboard subs. My application to make the cruise aboard the Nautilus was rejected because I was a woman, the Navy said. Submarines are not built or equipped to accommodate females, it said. There were no separate heads aboard for women to use in case they had to go during... Full story

It has been harder on some residents. It surely has been harder on area food banks. Although the recession has not hit Whitman County as hard as it has hit other areas, some wage earners have lost their jobs. Some dual income households now have but one provider. It is in such times and such circumstances that food banks are meant to provide important...
