    The new school year brought a new cell-phone use policy for seventh and eighth-graders at Colfax Junior-Senior High School. Students now are not allowed to bring cell phones to classrooms, use them between classes or in the cafeteria during lunch.     The Whitman County Planning Commission has postponed a continuation of a zone change hearing set for Oct. 3 for a grain facility proposal on Highway 26 next to Dusty.     Whitman County Prosecutor Denis Tracy said this week the sale of the Hawkins property on the state line marks an end to the county’s commitment to participate in any development of the property. The Hawkins property, which at one time was projected as the site of a shopping mall on the Washington side of the state line, had included a county commitment to provide funds for infrastructure in the event the Boise-based Hawkins could land tenants for the site of approximately 200 acres.     The owners of the Palouse Divide Lodge on Highway 6 above Harvard, Idaho, opened a store in Palouse Sept. 14.     A 49-year- old Lewiston man was flown to St. Joseph’s Regional Hospital after he was exposed to Aqua Ammonia Tuesday morning while transferring a load from a truck to a farm approximately a mile west of Albion. Sheriff Brett Myers said the injured person is a field technician for a local ag chemical delivery company. The ammonia was being transferred from the delivery tank to a local farm holding tank.     Justin Steve Aaron Strong, 22, was sentenced to two days in jail after he entered an Alford plea to a reduced charge of fourth-degree assault Friday in Whitman County Superior Court. Strong was sentenced to 90 days in jail with all but two days suspended and credited for the two days he was in jail after his arrest. The sentence was suspended for a year while he is on unsupervised probation. Strong was originally charged with second degree assault.     Whitman County Library has received a $15,000 grant from the Innovia Foundation to be used to expand technology classes for all-ages at branch libraries and schools. The grant was announced at the end of May and since then the Colfax library has bought a 3-D printer, seven Snap-Circuits kits, eight Little Bits kits, six iPads for technology classes at The Center and committed to added hours for staff to lead classes.     Whitman County Sheriff’s office Sept. 29 will offer a free, mandatory boater education course for Washington boaters. The seven-hour course will provide boaters the basics of safe boating.     Asotin defeated Colfax in three straight Tuesday night on the Panthers' court to stop the Bulldogs early run in the NE league.     The Mustangs from Heppner, Ore., departed Colfax late Friday night with a two-point win and sack lunches to tide them over for the four-hour trip back home.
