    The annual four-day run of the Palouse Empire Fair begins Thursday morning, with gates open at 8 a.m. The 2019 fair will feature the dedication of the new rodeo grandstand, with ribbon cutting Friday at 6:30 p.m. before the opening rodeo session.     Colfax Fire Department will host an open house Sunday, Sept. 15, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Colfax Station, 400 N. Mill Street. Members of the department invite the public to come and check out the station and the equipment and to honor Jim Krouse for his 50 years of dedicated service to the department. Krouse joined the department in 1969. At age 74, Jim is still one of the most active volunteers on the roster and serves on ambulance calls a month as an EMT. He rarely misses a fire call. Krouse...

    Following a contentious public hearing, Whitman County commissioners voted Tuesday to extend the county marijuana moratorium for six more months. The vote was unanimous.     The Endicott Food Pantry had its grand re-opening Thursday, Aug. 29, after it changed its service from bagged groceries to a 'shopping model' of pantry distribution. Paige Collins has made a push for pantries in the area to switch to a 'shopping model' because it is a much more dignified way to serve those who need food.     On Aug. 28, Washington State Health Officer Dr. Kathy Lofy signed a statewide standing order for naloxone, a medication that can reverse an opioid overdose. The order works like a prescription and allows any person or organization in the state to get naloxone from a pharmacy. An overdose of opioid drugs like prescription painkillers, heroin and fentanyl can cause a person’s breathing to slow or stop. Kimberling, who was jailed Aug. 6 after deputies received reports of threats he had made against others and later allegedly confiscated loaded guns and a cannon at a residence where he was residing in Garfield, was denied Friday morning in superior court.     The City of Palouse has adopted a flag. Approved at the Aug. 27 city council meeting, the design was brought to the council by resident Moses Boone. Boone and wife Amberly stated at the Aug. 27 meeting that they will donate money toward having some flags made.     A last, free boater education course for 2019 will be offered on Sept. 10-11, Tuesday and Wednesday in Pullman. The seven-hour class covers the basic rules of safe boating.     Volunteers responded to three fires in the area last Wednesday, Aug. 28. The fires at times threatened houses, but crews were able to stop them. Crews here joined District 13 volunteers to a fire reported along Highway 26 near the Luther curve, west of Colfax. The fire started along Highway 26 on the south side and burned up into pasture and one to two acres of crop land.     DRUG ARREST IN COLFAX Shanna M. Edwards, 35, Spokane, was booked into jail here early Aug. 28 on the probable charges of driving with a suspended license, and possession of heroin and methamphetamine. Edwards was arrested in Colfax at about 8:20 p.m. after she was seen driving on Main Street in the vicinity of Cougar Food Mart. Sheriff Sgt.
