Whitman Hospital & Medical Center Tuesday applied for a building permit for energy improvements and other projects with much of the work to be done on sections of the hospital that date back to 1968. Work will also include the kitchen and dietary areas and the hospital boiler systems. Amount of the job on the permit was listed at $3,428,123. Debbie Glass, hospital CEO, said a lot of the work involves energy improvements to the older sections of the hospital. “That part of the building now is over 45 years old,” Glass commented. CHS Inc., doing business as Primeland Cooperatives, Aug. 6 filed for a writ of garnishment against James H. Hughes of Endicott. The application seeks $23,474 awarded the cooperative in a May 3 judgment for sums overdue on purchases Hughes made from Primeland. The writ seeks to garnish assets from Columbia Grain where Primeland contends Hughes has property. In addition to the $23,474 judged due on the account, the writ seeks interest. A “blowout” book sale at the Colfax Library will run through the end of August under the sponsorship of Friends of Whitman County Library. To clear out a backlog of items, extra tables have been set up and prices reduced. Hours of the sale are Mondays through Wednesdays from 10 to 5, Thursdays and Fridays from 10 to 6, and weekends from 1 to 5. All proceeds benefit library programs and projects countywide. Backyard Harvest will distribute fresh community grown produce directly to those in need every Wednesday evening at 5 p.m. at the Peace Lutheran Church community garden. Called ACT 2, the classes are offered by the Community Colleges of Spokane for a minimal cost to participants. Dusty Alex Urtaza and Renee Crocker left Friday for their home in Las Cruces, New Mexico, after spending two weeks at the home of Bryan Jones. Alex, who is Bryan’s cousin, drove truck during harvest and helped with haying. Renee was able to drive truck when needed, herd cows, mow lawns and sell peaches.
