    Exchange students from Europe, South America and Asia are looking for host family homes in Whitman County. Cindy Ethington, an International Student Exchange representative, said the students are from 15 to 18 years of age, speak English enough to communicate well and will arrive about a week before school starts.   • Red Cross seeks hometown heroes

    The Inland Northwest Chapter of the American Red Cross is seeking nominations for the 2013 Hometown Heroes Awards to recognize the unsung heroes during its annual luncheon in November. Nomination deadline is Sept. 10. The categories include humanitarian, animal rescue, workplace safety, military, medical, law enforcement or dispatch, fire safety, wilderness rescue, water safety, community partner and local disaster hero.   • Primary return nears 10 percent

    As of Monday, 1,147 primary election ballots have been returned to the auditor’s elections office. The office mailed out 11,159 ballots on July 19. Deadline for returning the ballots will be the primary election date of Aug. 6. Mailed ballots are required to have a postmark of that date or earlier. The ballot levy proposals carry turnout requirements of 60 percent of the ballots cast in the last general election. The turnout for validation of the Pullman election is 2,428.     Members of the Pacific Rail Car Association made an unscheduled stop and visited with Rosalia residents two weeks ago. The speeder cars rolled past the Rosalia park just as the Rev. Stewart Nereim began a message during a community worship service in the park. He attempted to hold the attention of the audience as the cars rolled past one at a time.     All 14 branches of Whitman County Library will close Aug. 5-11 for their annual maintenance week. During the closure, a number of projects will be performed that are difficult to complete when the library is open, including carpet cleaning and computer upgrades. With the assistance of Microsoft’s software donation program, all staff work stations will receive upgraded operating systems at a cost of just $1,260 compared to $29,680 in retail prices.
