    To get started, it took an ’88 Mercury Tracer sitting in a field behind his brother’s girlfriend’s house. Last spring, Logan Hudson of Colton made a deal for the car. She would give it to him, and in return Pam Nagle would get the scrap proceeds after Hudson drove it in the Lewiston Demolition Derby. Two first-place trophies later, Nagle received $139 in scrap metal. Now Hudson is looking for another car.   • Colfax’s Kneale resigns as H.S. athletic director

    Colfax High School Athletic Director Shawna Kneale has submitted her resignation. The school district’s board received the letter Monday night at its meeting. “That’s too bad about Shawna,” said president Robert Smith, expressing the board’s disappointment to see her go. Kneale has served the last two years as athletic director, while also acting as assistant volleyball coach for the high school and junior high programs. “In short, I like the job, I enjoy it, but for me, it’s part-time pay for a full-time job,” Kneale said.     LaCrosse/Washtucna football coach for next season will be Justin Ziebel of Ritzville. He served as assistant coach under Jeff Nelson last year with the Tigercats. Nelson decided to step down from coaching the Tigercats after 19 years of heading the football program. The stint included five state eight-man titles and a state record string of football wins over four-plus title years.   • Endicott Bible Church plans park events

    Endicott Bible Church will host several events throughout the summer. According to Missionary Pastor Fred Tribble, the church will sponsor an every-other-week community meal, movie and garden vegetable share. Hot dogs, chips and lemonade will be served in the Endicott park July 3, 17, and 31, Aug. 14, and 28 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Endicott Park.   • Port to upgrade pilots’ lounge

    Port of Whitman County commissioners June 20 approved spending $7,500 to upgrade the pilots’ lounge at the Port of Whitman Business Air Center. Debbie Snell, port properties and development manager, said the improvements will be in the lounge and kitchen areas. New sheet rock and lighting will be included in the improvements, Snell said.   • Extra DUI patrols slated for July 4-5

    Extra patrols for drunken drivers will be July 4-5 with the aim of taking impaired drivers off the roadway. The patrols will be funded by a grant from Washington Traffic Safety Commission and supported by the Spokane County Target Zero Task Force. Whitman County deputies, WSP troopers, Pullman and Colfax police departments will have extra emphasis patrols. Fourteen summertime traffic deaths have been logged in Whitman County from 2007-2012.     A huge construction project is now complete at The Hilltop in Pullman. An open house will celebrate the occasion on Tuesday, July 2, from 5 to 7 p.m. The lodging almost doubled, from 59 rooms to 115.     Elizabeth, left, and Dale Mann opened the Palouse Hyde Out June 15 after two weeks of cleaning and rearranging. Most of the booths were removed and replaced with tables and chairs. The Manns purchased the Hyde Out from Brad Person after being employed by Dave Peterson at Boyer Park and Marina on the Snake River since 2006.   • Asotin man booked on attempt to elude charges

    Aaron R. Jones, 41, Asotin, was booked into the county jail here on charges of attempting to elude an officer on the River Road. He was arrested after he stopped near the Red Wolf Bridge intersection with the River Road. Deputy Robert Goldsby's arrest report said he was driving westbound on patrol along the road when a vehicle driven by the suspect approached from behind at a high rate of speed and passed him on the left.     Johnson will again mark its five hours of Independence Day fame with a breakfast offering at the community building and the free form Johnson Parade, billed as the most unique for area holiday celebrants.     Albion’s Fourth of July celebration will begin with its parade at noon followed by the annual barbecue at the gazebo on the city hall lawn.     Two juveniles were injured Sunday night, June 23, in a dirt bike collision off Highway 194 south of Colfax. Sheriff Brett Myers said the two riders, a six-year-old and a 15-year-old were taken by Colfax ambulances to Whitman Hospital.   • Work gets underway on Hume Road project

    Washington state officials determined the surface of Hume Road was in worse shape than any other road in the region in June 2012. Because of the deteriorating condition of Hume Road, Whitman County was awarded about $2 million in federal Surface Transportation Program funding, according to county Public Works Director Mark Storey. The county will rebuild nine miles of the road, starting at Steptoe and ending just 3.5 miles shy of Oakesdale, Storey said. Hume Road links Highway 195 with Oakesdale and Highway 27.     Crews are working at full steam at the McCoy loader site to get the massive project on line by the end of the harvest season. Elmer (Bud) Riedner, who has been named manager of the new McCoy Grain Terminal LLC, said they aim to be accepting the first shipments of grain by Aug. 15.
