    The extended candidate filing period, which concluded Wednesday, May 24, yielded nine more candidates. Ben J. Wolf, an incumbent, filed the morning of Wednesday, May 24, to retain his seat as commissioner for Whitman County Fire District 14, which covers the Uniontown and Colton area. He was the last candidate to file. The extended period allowed individuals to file for positions which did not have any candidates at the conclusion of the regular filing period on Friday, May 19. All together, there were nine filings in the extended period....

  • Ride for a Cure on Saturday

    The seventh annual Ride for a Cure benefit will begin Saturday, June 4, with motorcycle riders gathering at the Colfax Les Schwab. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. at Les Schwab, and cost to register is $15. Those funds will be donated to the American Cancer Society. Extra donations will also be accepted. Plans call for the riders to leave Les Schwab by 10:30 a.m. The ride will go through the Palouse country side and end in Rockford at Fredneck's Tavern where there will be drawings and door prizes....

  • Dugan files, then withdraws from mayor slot in Farmington

    Former Farmington mayor Ron Dugan filed as a candidate to return as mayor at the filing deadline and withdrew later that same day. Dugan filed in the 11 a.m. hour May 19, the last date for candidates in Whitman County. In the 3 p.m. hour, current Mayor Dave Baker filed for re-election.   • Colfax election over after filing period

    Election season for local races in Colfax ended May 24 when filing closed with just one candidate filing for each of the four open city council seats and the open school board seat. The extended filing period applied to just one seat left open on the council, and Blaine Golden switched his filing to that seat after originally filing for seat three.   • Oakesdale honors Crossett's Market

    The Town of Oakesdale presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Mike Crossett of Crossett's Food Market at the town council meeting May 15. The rare certificate was presented to Crossett and his store which has served Oakesdale for 69 years. The honor notes Crossett's support of the school, local organizations and fire department. The certificate was the first presented for the 12 years Mary DeGon has been clerk/treasurer for Oakesdale.     The second Colfax First Thursday of the season is slated today, June 1, and it will feature live entertainment from the Hankers.     The 48th annual Rosalia Battle Days is slated for this weekend, and it is booked with several new and old events. In January, a new president was appointed to the Rosalia Chamber of Commerce, and she has been working through the plans for the annual event with a committee.     County high schools will graduate 129 seniors over the course of two weekends. The “pomp and circumstance” march will take place in seven rural county schools this weekend and at one next weekend. Also, Pullman High School will graduate 170 seniors on Saturday, June 10.
