Dessert auction to fund Gulch Tekoa’s annual Slippery Gulch fireworks dessert auction will be Friday, May 17, at 6 p.m. in the Tekoa Community Center. In a new addition this year, it will be followed by a dance. The evening begins at 6 p.m. with a taco dinner (donations accepted) followed by the auction of dessert items. Nancy L. Francis, Rosalia, complained of neck and back pain after the 2009 Subaru Legacy she was driving Monday struck a cow on Highway 195 2.1 miles south of Colfax. Members of Tekoa and Oakesdale’s float committee have been named for the women of the year honor by the Preceptor Gamma Lambda chapter of Beta Sigma Phi of Tekoa and Oakesdale. They are Karen Blomgren, Robin Harp, Linda Zehm, Marianne Gordon, Melinda Gordon and (not pictured) Hillary Lawson. St. John Harry and Erma Davis this year marked their 65th wedding anniversary. They were married May 8, 1948. Harry said they grew up together in the small town of Lamont. They were the first couple to get married in the Community Church in Sprague. The first had burned down and was being rebuilt at the time. They made their home at the Lamont farm where they had three children. They moved to Sunset for about 10 years and then built a home in St. John where they still live. 8 years ago May 18, 1888 One of the timbers in the bridge crossing the Palouse at the foot of Main Street gave away on Tuesday while a loaded truck was passing over. The bridge settled about a foot at the point where the break occurred. The bridge is closed up and teams to and from the depot are compelled to ford the river, which is low, until the break is repaired. Capt. J.A. Endicott Endicott is gearing up this week for the town-wide garage sale, which will be on Saturday, May 18, from 8 a.m. until noon. Maps of garage sale places will be available at the Endicott Food Center for people to pick up. To keep buyers going during the sale, the Community Club will have a bake sale at Endicott Food Center with all proceeds going to Relay For Life. The McGregor Company’s Standing Tall for American Agriculture scholarship program focuses support of agriculture at a most important level - students. Four local high school seniors each received a $1,000 Standing Tall for American Agriculture Scholarship to go toward their college tuition. Diane and Randy Daniels can hardly believe that they’ve been in Colfax for 21 years, because the time has gone by so quickly. Their three children are grown and working, and they have time for activities that they both enjoy. As people plant gardens this year, they are asked to consider planting an extra row for community food banks and senior meals sites. Many people spend time in gardens, planning, planting and enjoying bountiful harvests. Registration is now open for the 13th annual Fishing Kids day at Gilchrist Pond along Union Flat Creek road Saturday, June 8. Pre-registered children ages 5 to 14 in Whitman County and surrounding areas are invited to the pond from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for the annual event. The 25th anniversary of the National Lentil Festival is looking for recipes from across the country for this year’s competition, “The Legendary Lentil Cook-Off.” Every year, the cook-off receives creative and delicious recipes. Finally, a practical method for extending one’s life: Researchers at the Harvard Medical School have concluded that a person can slow the aging process and prevent disease by drinking around 750 bottles of red wine a day.
