    Thrifty Grandmothers donate to The Center Colfax Thrifty Grandmothers Monday presented a check for $5,000 to Whitman County Library staffers Catalina Flores and Shirley Cornelius for the Bettie Steiger Community Enrichment Center at the library.     The official kickoff event to the 2017 National Lentil Festival in Pullman has been booked for June 1 at Chipman & Taylor Chevrolet. The kickoff event is the annual poster unveiling. “It is the first event we have that starts the countdown two-and-a-half months away from the festival,” said Britnee Packwood, Lentil Festival director.     Lone Pine work day Members of Friends of the Lone Pine Cemetery met for a work day April 20 with help from students at Upper Columbia Academy in Spangle. In rain and cold wind, the group tore out brush at the site west of Tekoa and put it in piles to be burned at a later date. The cemetery operated from 1883 to 1953.     Soundararajan earns art honor Rajeswari Soundararajan, director of Sudiksha Center for Classical Arts of India in Pullman, was named recipient of this year's mayor’s award for Artwalk. She teaches and performs a classical dance of India called Bharatanatyam. Since 2008, she has showcased this cultural dance with her students through annual Sudiksha charity dance concerts.     Endicott ANNE LOWE Gazette Correspondent Elizabeth Circle of Trinity Lutheran Church has been working on baby quilts all winter. These quilts were then wrapped around baby supplies, such as diapers and pins, soap, towels, pajamas, outfits and coats. On April 30, these 31 bundles were blessed and then mailed to missions overseas May 5.     The St. John/Endicott Dollars for Scholars Foundation plans a shred truck service in St. John at the corner of Front and Main streets on Saturday, May 13, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. “People are welcome to bring their shreddable items,” said Marlene Landers, foundation manager.
