    County Building Inspector Dan Gladwill presented the first quarter building report for 2018 to county commissioners Monday. Total valuations were $1.66 million, including $800,000 in commercial development. Total building permits issued were 33 with five permits pending. Total inspections were 77 with final inspections numbering 20. The total valuation was up from last year's first quarter total of $1.2 million.   • Palouse seeks to fill panel

    The City of Palouse seeks letters of interest to fill a vacated position on the Planning Commission. Interested parties may send a letter to Palouse City Hall at 120 East Main Street, or drop it off in person. Applicants must live within city limits. The planning commission investigates, reviews and makes recommendations to the city council on matters of the comprehensive plan, land use planning and zoning.     Mayor Todd Vanek April 16 reported state Department of Transportation officials have requested a session with the city council to discuss the next course of action for revision of the intersection of highways 26 and 195 at the north end of town. Plans for the intersection have been sidetracked after state officials learned the project had not qualified for a federal Transportation Improvement Grant for Economic Recovery.   • 'In control' conviction determined

    A superior court jury April 16 convicted Julian C. Lester, 35, Pullman, of being in physical control of a vehicle while under the influence. The jury also found that Lester had three or more offenses within the last 10 years. Lester was arrested Feb. 8 while he was parked in a van along the Pullman-Albion Road near the Pat Old Road intersection. According to the arrest report, Lester told deputies he had consumed four 40-ounce beers that night. He underwent a breath test that indicated a blood alcohol content of .169.     Port of Whitman commissioners signed a contract for consulting services with Community Attributes Inc., of Seattle April 19. The contract covers a scope of work over a six month timeline focused on building a strategic plan for the Port’s Pullman Industrial Park-West located on the corner of Pullman-Albion Road and Highway 27.     Washington State Parks has started a project for renaming the John Wayne Trail which crosses Whitman County on the former right-of-way of the Milwaukee Railroad, according to an announcement made by Randy Kline, state parks planner who is heading the project.     Leona F. “Cubby” Herman, lifelong Colfax resident, passed away on Thursday, April 19, 2018, at the Whitman Hospital. She was 91. Leona was born on September 3, 1926, to W. Raymond and Nellie Lyons Culbertson. She attended Hamilton School and graduated from Colfax High School in 1944.
