Stephen C. Nelson, Spokane Valley, was unhurt April 5 in a one-car accident on Highway 195 south of Colfax. Nelson was driving a 1989 Toyota Rav4 southbound at 3:50 p.m. when it drifted onto the shoulder of the highway and went into the ditch where it collided with a barbed wire fence 2.4 miles south of Colfax, according to the Washington State Patrol report. The City of Moscow has opened the voting period for the 2017 Moscow Farmers Market poster. The voting is open to anyone. Five posters which a jury panel has selected from all of the entries are up for vote. According to an update from the Whitman County Parks and Recreation Department, Kamiak Butte trails are beginning to show signs of spring. The Pine Ridge Trail at Kamiak Butte was noted to be clear of snow and ice Tuesday. The West End Primitive Trail is still catching up, but is mostly clear of snow and ice. A section of approximately 30 feet near the top of the north side of that trail is still covered with compact snow. Colfax City Council April 3 approved a contract for Scott Parrish of Colfax to do the mowing at McDonald Park on a bid of $2,000 per month. Councilman Al Vorderbrueggen reported the contract has been accepted by the city’s parks committee. Colfax Golf Course, which had previously held the contract for McDonald, and a landscaping firm also bid on the mowing job. Colfax residents saw a bump in monthly utility bills this month because the total includes the sum due for water use for four months. The city does not read meters during the winter months, so this month’s bill will include water use for December, January and February in addition to the current month. The catchup on the water bills added approximately $12,800 to the total billed out. Billing total for this month was $122,035 compared to $109,194 for the previous month. Colfax Fire Chief Steven Thime has prepared an information sheet to assist residents who apply for outdoor burning permits. Residents are required to call the fire department to obtain a permit before setting an outdoor fire within the city limits. In the first four days of this month, the city issued eight permits with five requested Saturday. The navigation lock at Little Goose Dam returned to service at approximately 10 p.m. on Monday, April 10, according to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials in the Walla Walla District. The corps conducted an extended navigation lock maintenance outage Dec. 12 through March 20. The 14-week-long closure affected all eight navigation locks on the Columbia and Snake rivers, during which time critical, non-routine repairs and maintenance, plus routine maintenance and scheduled improvements, were completed. A $15,455 technology grant recently announced by The Washington State Library will provide laptops and tablets that will be used in digital learning classes featuring Microsoft Imagine Academy and Coding Camp curriculum. This equipment was awarded to the Endicott, LaCrosse, Malden, Rosalia and St. John branch libraries. Arthur G. Evans Dr. Arthur G. Evans, 85, who retried at Colfax in 1987, died unexpectedly last Thursday, March 31, 2017, at his home in Sun City, Ariz. A celebration of his life will be at a later date at Blanchard, Idaho. Dr. Evans and his wife, Judy, spent winter months in Sun City and summer months at Stoneridge at Blanchard. After receiving his degree in medicine in 1958 from the University of Oklahoma, he began practicing medicine in Priest River, Idaho, and then moved to Newport where he practiced for 17 years before coming to Colfax. The Pullman-Moscow Regional Airport has received three bids for the next phase of the runway reconstruction project, Tony Bean, airport administrator, reported last week. Bids have been received from MA DeAtley Construction out of Clarkston, Selland Construction, Inc. out of Wenatchee and Nelcon, Inc. out of Kalispell, Mont. Sara Olsen and McKenzie Brumet of Schweitzer Engineering present an $8,000 donation to Whitman County Library Director Kristie Kirkpatrick and Catalina Flores, branch services coordinator. The donation will be used for the restroom project at the Bettie Steiger Community Enrichment Center.
