  • Pastor's Corner

    Mar 26, 2014

Dr. Dan Siegel introduced the “word” MWe in his recent book, Brainstorm. “MWe” denotes personal growth from “only Me” to include “also We.” MWe begins with the point that each of us has an indivisible and deeply personal life. Most simply put, “Me” is all that your skin surrounds. “We,” on the other hand, is what connects you with God, with others and also with the world in which you live. MWe offers each of us a new way of understanding just what it means to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. Jesus was speaking to the “Me” of each of us when...

  • Good old days

8 years ago The Commoner March 22, 1889 It is estimated that Washington territory has 6,000,000 acres of land peculiarly adapted to raising wheat and which will produce from 30 to 40 bushels per acre every season. Oregon also has millions of such acres, and in a few years many more thousands of these millions of acres than are now producing in both state and territory will be under cultivation. An incipient blaze in the residence of C.R. Meeker, near Wall Street bridge Thursday forenoon, was discovered and extinguished just in time to...

Editor’s Note: The following column was originally published in 2009. I was a very young boy when I realized that my life’s purpose — the reason I’d been put on this earth — was to torment my sister Amy. Amy basically had only two emotional states: She was either in a frenzy, screaming and sobbing and shouting, or she was really upset. Anything I did to irritate or anger her would set off such a horrifyingly cataclysmic reaction that I couldn’t wait to do it again. When Amy became a teenager and her unstable condition was enhanced by hormones...

Unconscionable I can’t believe that the board and administration of the Oakesdale School District is continuing their asinine idea of bulldozing through the bond for $7.1 million dollars to rebuild and remodel the school. There are approximately 100 students in the whole school. To spend this amount of money on this number of students is unconscionable. And to put the taxpayers in debt for the next 26 years to boot! We will be paying the bill long after any small benefit is exhausted. News flash: A new school is not going to get the students w... Full story

During the Winter Olympics, viewers around the world marveled at the pristine snow-capped mountains surrounding Sochi, Russia’s Black Sea resort city. One American camera crew even took a ride on the Siberian railroad filming the picturesque countryside. Too bad they didn’t go all the way to Norilsk, some 1,800 miles from Moscow in the middle of Siberia. Norilsk is Russia’s most polluted city. It reminds you of an America mining town a century ago. It is pockmarked with tall smoke stacks belching out nearly 500 tons each of copper and nicke... Full story

It turns out that SAT words were too abstruse. The College Board is updating its iconic test yet again in ways that are indistinguishable from dumbing it down. The old vocabulary words are out, the math is easier, guessing is no longer punished in the scoring — and we’re supposed to believe that the test is better than ever. The SAT, relied on heavily in college admissions, has long been attacked for not producing sufficiently egalitarian results. The multiple-choice test has been accused of everything from racism to classism. It is almost cer...

A pickup truck slammed into Colfax Computer Services early Saturday morning. The driver allegedly had been drinking. Nearly every conversation about the wreck included something like “I’m glad nobody was hurt.” Drunk driving carries a heavy stigma. In 1982, about 60 percent of all traffic fatalities were alcohol related. By 2011, alcohol related fatalities had dropped to 38 percent. Times have changed, but dangers still abound on the highways. These new dangers do not carry the same social stigma as drunk driving, but one thing hasn’t changed... Full story

Returning coach Andrea Miller has a turnout of 26 kids, including a few who place at state last year. LaCrosse senior Darcy Stamper is the defending state champion for boys 1B high jump, although a pin in his wrist from a broken bone from basketball season will keep him out of this event for the time being. Miller said the pin in his wrist is due to be taken out in three weeks and sometime after that he’ll be cleared to jump again. In...

  • Colton High baseball picks up for 2014 season

    Garth Meyer, Gazette Reporter|Mar 26, 2014

Practice began and attendance was full with three players. That’s how the Colton High School 2014 baseball season began, as the rest of the team was in the midst of a quest to win the state 1B basketball championship. "We got a lot of swings with those three guys," said seventh-year Colton coach Pat Doumit. "Played a lot of catch with the same three guys." Once the rest of the team returned from Spokane with the coveted gold-ball trophy, they picked up their mitts and came out for baseball. A t...
