Southeast 1B football games return post haze

County 1B football teams will be back in action Friday, all at home, after last week’s cancellations due to smoke in the air from wildfires.

Garfield/Palouse (1-0) is set to host Lakeside (Plummer) Friday at 7 p.m. in a non-league game.

Colton (0-1) will meet Wallace at 7 p.m. and St. John/Endicott/LaCrosse (0-1) is at home in St. John against Selkirk in more non-league action.

Last week, the Eagles were set to go north to Curlew for a Saturday afternoon game which was cancelled due to worse air quality than in Whitman County. In Northeast Washington, near the Canadian border, Curlew took in smoke from three fires in the vicinity, including one in British Columbia.

“They were still raining ash on the field Saturday morning,” said S.J.E.L. Coach Ken Gering.

Back on the practice field this week, the Eagles prepared to face Selkirk, a young, running team.

Colton had a bye last week.

Garfield/Palouse missed a potential key test Sept. 8 when their game against Odessa/Harrington was cancelled. The chance to play it at a later date appears moot as cancellations have affected schedules across the region.

Gar/Pal was to play Lewis County, Idaho, Sept. 22, which the Eagles had to subsequently cancel in order to fit in a rescheduled league game from last week. Garfield/Palouse Athletic Director Scott Thompson, in turn, has added a game against Deary Sept. 29 which was originally a bye week for the Vikings.

The following week, Gar/Pal will play Clearwater Valley Oct. 6, a game that was added after Pomeroy announced it would not field a varsity team.
