Drovers rodeo brings in 146 junior wranglers

The Drovers Junior Rodeo Association’s D.R. McEachran Memorial Championship Rodeo marked its 26th edition over three days at the Palouse Empire Fairgrounds last weekend. A total of 146 wranglers from Washington, Idaho, Oregon and British Columbia competed.

The rodeo was moved from Davenport to Colfax this year. J.P. Melton, one of the organizers for the association, said the Palouse Empire Fairgrounds’ facility and camping areas helped bring the event here. He added they plan to be back with the same event at the same weekend next year.

Winners of each event received a buckle, and cash awards went to the top three placers.

The rodeo also presented $250 to winners of all-around awards in each age division.

Also, the National Barrel Horse Association added $1,000 to the prize fund in barrel racing for Saturday night. Melton said the added fund was awarded in a method that encouraged more racers to compete at a time in the season when many have a good idea of who will have the fast horses in the event.

The three-day event was sanctioned by the Eastern Washington Junior Rodeo Association and serves as a championship event after competitors earn points through the season.

Competitors observed “Tough Enough to Wear Pink Day” on Saturday.
